Orchids and river rock

I have noticed some orchid arrangements where they are surrounded in a vase with river rocks. Although some appear to be fake flowers, I was wondering if it would be possible with the real thing? Will it have an effect on the root growth and watering?

I have seen arrangements that use more of the orchid than just the flower spike or flower stem, but taking a part of the plant, like a pseudobulb or cane, will set the plant back unless it is a very large/specimin plant. Cynthia, Prescott, AZ
