Sphag'n'Gag - How to get an orc out of moss?

I bought a 2nd Bollopetalum, and this one is in sphag. Ordinarily, not a problem; I have two small phals that seem to like it, but this plant's mix has some sort of mold or something to which I am violently allergic, so it has to go. I've never removed roots from moss; does it just require extra-long pre-soaking or are there some handy tricks I should know? I can double-and triple the allergy pills and inhaler use for a few more days (I really like this plant!).

It's easier to remove if you wet the moss. I also use a skewer or chopstick to carefully pic at the areas that are more "woven" into, so I don't break anymore roots than you have to. There's no special trick, just try and follow the areas where the grower placed the moss and you should be fine.

most Sphagnum moss is used with potting its guided around the roots in a circular motion
as Jenny has said when the sphag is wet its more pliable and easier to remove when you do get close to the top of the roots I use tweezers to remove the sphag.

I have also found a skewer useful to "pick" around the roots and remove moss. I have found the wetter the better when removing it. I have even been known to hold the roots under gently running water to get rid of as much as I can. As you may guess I am NOT a fan of moss. It probably comes from the fact that I tend to overwater. Roots and sphag are always rediculously intertwined for me. I usually just dig in, carefully that is, but since you're allergic, maybe get some nitrile/latex gloves so you don't further harm yourself. And yes, dampen the moss first...much easier.
