Coconut shells

I pot almost all of my plants in coconut shells.
I chop off the top third of a coconut, let it dry out and then put my plants in it.
I also attempt to mulch up the top third and use it as the planting medium.
I eat the rest
Hope this is helpful for someone.

It looks great!
Do you drill drain holes in it?
Thanks for sharing this

I don't drill any holes. Often the shell splits when cutting it. I just wire em together and they drain fine. They will hold water for about 30 sec maybe. I usually just put them in a rainwater cistern and soak them.

I really like this idea. I can buy one at the grocery store and try it even though I live in a frozen tundra . It will make winter easier to get through!
Thanks!!

Did you treat the coconut shells with anything, or wash it using a particular method?
I am interested in this 'pot', and want to learn more

Our local zoo has a lot of their orchids around the grounds potted up in coconut husks as well. It looks great but, again, its not easy to find entire coconuts where I live.

Nothing particular. The wife scraps the meat out with a spoon.
We throw them out back, ant's and whatnot eat the residue.
Let 'em dry out, cut them, sand the edges to look nice.
Rinse them out with the garden hose.
The only "trick" is I use a small dremel bit to drill holes for the wires to keep them from splitting entirely.
Hope this is helpfull.
Sometimes the wife will sell a few extras in the market for 20 Baht.

There is a restaurant that serves fresh coconut drink in its husks...I will ask a waiter to save me some and dry them in the summer sun...I think its a neat idea to grow cattleyas and phals...need to bore holes;some can be hung or saw the bottom flat to make it steadier standing...THANKS!

Actually is is far better if that is collected when it is brown. Green coconut when opened or split , will turn into very weird shape when dried in the sun. You better off getting brown ones, they don't change shape.
