I use stalite and like it a lot. I've been using it for over a year w/good success. I use it in combo w/chc for my mature phals, w/chc and sphag for seedling phals, in a mix of chc/tree fern and sphag for my bulbos as well as a several other moisture lovers.
I just recently started a small test (stalite + leca) on some catts that like a bit more moisture. They are fine now but it's way too soon to tell if it's going to be a success in my growing conditions. I can't see why it wouldn't work for catts though.
The best descriptor I've found is on repotme's website (where I get it): Stalite Slate is an all natural medium mined in the United States from volcanic slate which is then rotary kiln fired to over 2000 degrees. The material is then made into sterile granules or pieces that are extremely porous and PH neutral. It has the ability to aerate and also hold moisture/nutrients for orchid roots to seek. Because it is essentially a type of lightweight rock, it is extremely durable, and will not compress. It has low absorption yet the pores store vital moisture and nutrients for uptake.
