I use horticultural grade charcoal. I buy the large chunks and if need I can break them down.

I also save wine corks, the synthetic type won't break down. Real cork will hold up for a few years.

You can also use a net pot inverted if you potting media is not a fine texture, even if it is you can place screen or landscape fabric over the net pot.

Like FLbob said, wine corks work great. I also save some pieces of the white styrofoam packing pieces from computer and/or other mail order shipments. You can break into pieces and use the same as peanuts. Be sure that you know what you're using. Sometimes you will receive biodegradable packing peanuts (usually pink or off color). If you wet your hands, and the peanuts stick to your fingers and start to melt, don't use them; that's why I suggest using the white styrofoam packing material.

I find that lava rocks work grate specially if you need more stability for your container, usually when your chid is very tall.
Rocks are heavier but hold a lot of air........
A big bag of lava rock will cost you around $4-6.....

You can find packing peanuts in your local UPS or UHaul stores.

I also use recycled styrofoam packaging. It's free!

I use lava rocks too. They are porous to keep moisture but drain very good. So the roots all the moisture but not standing water.

Use styrofoam that is use for protecting things. When I buy a TV, the box comes with big chunks, which I break up and use as if they were the peanuts.

Other than that, anything works that doesn't break down. Rocks, some corks, clay, pot shards, gravel... the list goes on

Be careful about the type of peanuts you use because some are made of cornstarch and will dissolve almost instantly. Those ones are edible. They make a good party trick, but a horrible media. Go ahead, stick one in your mouth....does it melt? Dont use it.
