Cool How to pot Neofinetia falcata - Japanese style!

For those of you who collect Neofinetia falcata, and like to pot using the traditional Japanese method, here is a step by step guide on how to do it:
How to repot Neofinetia - a set on Flickr

It takes a bit of practice to get the hang of it! It also is much easier if you have the extra long NZ sphagnum moss (grade AAAA or AAAAA!).

Here is a picture of the finished product:

Enjoy!

How interesting, and thank you for sharing! So the net pot is really on the inside of the plant? Woulda thunk?!

Thanks for the info on this style of potting. Do you know if this style will work in a very humid environment, like in Houston?

I would think it would work just fine. You may not need to water as much?
Would you be growing these indoors or outside?

Yes, it creates an air space. I got the idea from a Seed Engei (Neo vendor from Japan) as they were selling plastic net inserts for exactly this purpose. I have a lot of these net pots lying around, so why buy the inserts when these will work just fine?!

Thats a darn good idea to use those net pots like that. I though you had taken it out of the moss ball. I usually leave min as an empty cavity but Mine are due for repotting soon might have to run to the hydro shop.

I really like the technique. I'm interested in the source for the ceramic pot with the big hole in the base. I could see placing a net pot up the bottom hole and using the ceramic pot for other types of orchids.

The pots are handmade by an artist in the UK. They have a presence on Ebay.
They range from $20-$30. You can find plain black mass produced ones for about $10.

Why not inquire with New World Orchids?
I get mine from Seed Engei, they are at most of our shows here in California.
Your ebay source is from Japan, hence the high shipping charges!

I've checked the NWO website (boy, those beautiful pots are expensive!)...no plastic pots, but I didn't think to see if they might know.

Thanks for the suggestion!

Sorry for a slight hijack - it IS related - but I heard something the other day that tickled me:

Early on, I always thought neofinetia was pronounced "Nee-oh-fin-eesh-a", was later corrected and told it was "Nee-oh-fin-e-Tee-a", but I just learned that it was a second genus named after a Frenchman - Finet (Feen-Ay), so it really should be "Nee-oh-feen-Ay-ya".

Thank that'll catch on?
