close-in VA peeps:

anyone know of a nursery/garden shop that has repotting services in a reasonable drive from fairfax? one of our secretaries impulse-bought three big phals, and i suspect the first repotting may be a bit much for her; probably better if she watches someone else do it, but everybody i know is in MD... thx!

I don't know of anywhere around there, but there are quite a few videos on utube for repotting orchids. I watched a bunch of them before I repotted anything.

Hmmm. Merrifield Garden Center (on Route 29, just west of Fairfax) might do this. They sell a lot of different potting mixes, and they might just do repots (they sell a lot of orchids, too, and they are usually pretty healthy).

WOW!!! That's MY NEIGHBORHOOD!!!!!!!!!!! HAHHAHA! helloooo!

I would definately call Merrifield Garden Center (either the Fair Oaks location or the Merrifield one) Even better if you take photos of the plant from all different angles and distances and then go talk to them in person. The lady at the Fair Oaks location is great (sadly my brain is not allowing me to remember her name right now)

And then go find Al's Orchid Greenhouse in Leesburg, Va. They sell thousands and he can give you all the supplies, potting medium, plants, etc that you could ever need.

What I would do is go online and google "potting an orchid" there are some videos online that show you step-by-step how to do it...

Most of the local spots around here won't repot it for you, but they'll tell you and show you how.

Also check into the NCOS (National Capital Orchid Society) of which I'm a member- it's $25 to join and you get as much free advice as you could ever want from LOCAL experts. it's crazy how many of us are out there with the orchid bug just here in DC alone.

Then, if you want a fun weekend trip, so check out Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, PA (just outside Wilmington, DE) it's about a 2.5 hour drive and the best orchids and botanical gardens you'll ever see!!!!

HAPPY GROWING!!!!!!

"Orchids for You" in Vienna does repotting. Give them a call.(don't have number in my hand but google the name.) they are open Friday thru Sunday but don't always have the time to repot. Getting there is interesting so if you decide to go, PM me and I'll give you directions. Also bring money. You will not leave without at least one new orchid.
I love Merrifield but doubt they do it. They may have individuals to recommend.

-waves at erin and nic-

yes, i frequent al's, and have been to OfYou; maybe i'll suggest she stop by there just for a visit and when her plant needs repotting she'll know where they are. i don't think she's going to be getting as into it as we are.

(and yes, longwood is gorgeous--went there for the orchid fest. only came home with one plant. aren't i good?? )

Johnson's Garden Center in DC and Kensington does repotting periodically - click on the repotting schedule in the left margin. I've met the lady who does it and she's great:
