help with repotting root bound dendrobium

Im in the middle of repotting and it seems like im at a point where more roots are break than bark falling out. I still have about 2 inch of the root mass untouched. Moving from a 4 in pot to 5 in.

Please help, soaking the roots again as i type.

Should i stop?

I think some would just upsize the pot, if it is just too hard to untangle the roots without causing further injury to the plant. But you can try soaking first the roots, in case if it will make it a bit more pliable.

I always try to get as much of the old medium out as possible. I'll soak the root mass a couple hours first and then gently try to pry apart the roots. More often than not if I take the time I am successful without breaking a lot if roots.

i just bought a kingianum last weekend and it was so root bound. i soaked a long time and got quite a bit of old sphag out but couldn't get all of it. i ended up just putting it in a net pot and filled lava rock and hydroton around it. hoping it will do ok.
