epidendrum quitensium in rock

I just picked up some orchids from a private collection, all of them bare root. Was walking back to the car and the guy I bought from gave me an epidendrum quitensium potted in rock in a 2 inch pot (got a bonus as we walked past the mother plant and he plucked off a blooming growth with long roots and new growth).

Wondering if anyone has any experience with this particular species orchid, and if anyone has any advice on growing in rock.

This orchid in its native habitat is an epiphyte, so it likes rocks. But all my other plants are in bark or mounted. How should i approach watering if its in rock? Same as if it was in bark?

As far as the small blooming growth he gave me, I am thinking about mounting that one considering the roots, but am open to suggestions. Currently have it clipped onto a trellis. Seems happy.

Thanks in advance!

I have a few orchids growing in rock, all do well, the dendrobiums more so. I mist every day or so, and water 2 times a week...
I would say that if it is thirsty plant that loves to be moist, not the medium for that, but if "mom" was in rock, and doing well, I say go for it

Thanks for replies.

Just came back from the local orchid nursery and they were curious how the rocks would hold moisture. That was my concern too. They recommend that I repot in a mix of coarse, fine, perlite, and charcoal. Their Epi's love that mix and it works for them.

Since I know I won't be able to water daily (sometimes twice, it was 85 today!) I better get moving on the repot.

Will post pics of that Epi that is free standing and clipped onto a trellis when blooms open. Looks like they will be white with some purple.

Thanks again,

CO
