Question Best material for baskets

Hubby and I are making some baskets. Before I go over board making them, does anyone know if white cedar is toxic to orchids? It is great for standing up to water. Often used in boats. But, will it hurt my babies? I have access to a bunch of it and could probably make baskets for 1000 plants or more.

I think orchid baskets are typically made from cedar. Do a Google image search for 'cedar orchid baskets' for some ideas & definitely bring pics back

Some vendors use cedar shingles for mounts and the orchids I have growing on them are clinging for dear life and seem rather happy.

Awesome. I know that white cedar and red are somewhat different and didn't want troubles.

Anton, I have not seen your sticky but will take a look. I have made a couple already today. Pinned the bottom then drilled the corners and used some coated stiff wire to put them together. It leaves a loop on top to either just hold it together or attach whatever hanger I may use.

The wood will not be a problem. The problem with commercial baskets is the poor quality of the galvanized wire they use to hold it together. The baskets fall apart in as little as 3 years. You want to get the heaviest grde american galvanize you can work with.

Another grower suggested VERY heavy monofilament fishing line. 200# test ought to do. She ties a loop in one end, feeds it down through the holes, then ties a knot on the bottom.

You can also find aluminum wire that works well.

I have plastic coated wire that I used. I believe it is aluminum on the inside. They turned out pretty good and the plants seem happy.
