I've just noticed a few small white furry/velvety patches on some of the roots growing out of the top of the pot. The largest patch (which is still tiny) is on a root that is dying, but I think it's dying because it dried out before I bought the plant (the end of the root was completely dried and shriveled up). I've noticed a few other very tiny patchs on green roots as well. Is this something to be worried about? If so, how should I get rid of it. Would hydrogen peroxide work? -Liz

Are you sure it's fungus and not Mealy Bug? A Q-tip dipped in alcohol and applied to the little critter will turn it dark brown immediately solving the problem as long as they don't get to much of a head start on you. If you can, a picture would help. Hope you find out what it is for sure. AL Last edited by Bird Song Farm; 01-28-2008 at 04:56 PM. Reason: correct spelling

Liz, It probably is just a surface mold on the dead roots. Maintain good air circulation and monitor your watering. Surface molds will grow on moist bark when inadequate light and sufficient air is not provided. If the problem persists, repot using fresh media.
