kill mites using Rosemary??? is this true?

Rosmarinus officinalis

Rosemary, one of the testing variables in this experiment, is advertised as being able to kill fleas. Fleas, like dust mites, are arachnids and are susceptible to rosemary. Rosmarinus officinalis is the scientific name of this Mediterranean plant. The oil in rosemary kills mites by drying the moisture out that mites need. Rosemary is also used in perfumes, because of its fragrance
BBC - h2g2 - Dust Mites seasonings and liniments

Can anyone verify this?

I read somewhere that it worked on fleas. I have a huge rosemary plant also. Might be worth some research/experimentation. I will look it up tomorrow, I'm off to bed now. Nice find Yoda-I mean digital! May the force be with you!

Hey Digital, Check out this site. It is an organic and effective against mites and insects. If you download the label you will see that it has rosemary in it. I just used it on all my orchids since my Catasetinae orchids had mites. They all seem to be fine without mites and it has killed of the fungus gnats too.

unfornately i also looking for cheap solution for my problem. yes it contain Rosemary oil
but not all Rosemary essential oil is the same. 0.1% is too little plus they give me an impression that almond oil is the main ingredient not Rosemary oil. So I hope someone has
tried this.

You can also put rosemary oil on things you don't want pets to chew on. Tastes bitter.

I've heard of Rosemary being planted around different veges to ward off bugs, grubs and stuff.

Okay, searching now. I have found that crushed Rosemary steeped in Vodka is great for dandruff.

All right, you asked for it. A 107 page thesis paper discussing Rosemary as a pesticide and it's efficacy:

Hi all.
I enjoy reading about different types or organic oils for control of certain pest.
Like the spider mite family, scales and other garden pest to a certain extent.
I have used Eco-Oils for these problems for several years. (Canola & tea Tree extract oils)
I suppose it really does not what type maters as long as the oils are organic
Rosemary would just be another typeetc.
Also check out Organic Crop Protectants
Green Harvest - General Purpose Spray Products

I suppose the main thing is the fact they are very low in toxicity to humans and pets.
I was very sceptal at first on there effecincy but am now a big user of them.
Best of luck with them
cheerio

I have not had time to read very much of it, as I am doing some school research right now. Since I was already searching, wasn't much to open another tab and skim for the Rosemary lol. I have saved a copy though.

I can tell you anecdotally that rosemary plants don't do squat-diddly as far as keeping aphids or spider mites away. I'm surrounded by rosemary shrubs - big ones - and I keep finding aphids and mites trying to munch on my fuchsias or occasionally an orchid

but do they leave your rosemary alone?? If they leave your rosemary alone
it might just prove the point.

You can tuck sprigs of rosemary on your pantry shelves to keep bugs away.

that not what the thesis mentioned. It kill by ingestion so mites have to eat it to die. So spray finely chopped rosemary might help. Does this work??? I was
thinking buy a whole bunch from the supermarket put it into a blender and
blended it to a nice pulp. Then mix with water and spray all over the plant...
(how to get rid of the fibre?)

Sharyn is just fantasticSharyn is just fantastic
If you think that Rosemary will work for the mites, why don't you try some Essential Oil of Rosemary - about 10-15 drops per quart and spray around your plants. Essential oil is very concentrated and much stronger than you can get from blending your own rosemary. Essential oil should be 100% pure and may be purchased at any quality health food store - relatively inexpensive.

Many essential oils will help to control pests; however, I doubt that they will totally irradicate them. I've had good and bad luck with them.

Summary of the thesis paper
dilution factor should be 7.5ml per litre of water. meaning 7.5ml of essential oil of Rosemary
with 1litre of water. Any higher doses does not seem to do anything for spider mites. It
kill on contact. Meaning if you spray on the leaves it will not kill them. You have to spray
under the leave , that is where most spider mites is found.
