Remove this Phal leaf?

I received a Phal as a housewarming gift and it had a split leaf. There is considerable "yellowing" around the damaged area. Plant is in a screened in balcony in Central Florida. I do have a fan for ventilation and it has been repotted with fir bark chips; roots were white/green and very little decay.

Should I remove this leaf, if so, how far away from the crown should I do?

Thanks

AOS | Phalaenopsis

Here are a couple of links for you to start with. I would cut around the yellow into the green part of the leaf, but I would not cut off the entire leaf. I am curious as to why it is yellowing, as I have had split leaves that did not do this. The leaf might look funny, but it will still help to feed the rest of the plant. I have a Phal that has a leaf with a perfect round hole where I cut out a bacterial spot after I rescued it, a year later it's still there and the leaf is healthy.

I could be wrong, but it looks like the beginning of sunburn to be honest...

It is either sunburn or age and in both cases it is not necessary to remove the leaf. You should only cut off part of a leaf when you have active black rot. Any other time it only creates an entry for disease.

If it is not useful to the plant any longer, the plant will discard it by it turning brown and shriveling. Plants have been shedding unnecessary leaves without us humans for millions of years.

Ok, thanks guys. I'm guessing it got the sunburn before it was given to me. The person who bought it for me probably didnt know what to look for when purchasing an orchid. I'm making sure there is no standing water on the plant when I water and it is out of direct sunlight the entire day.

I just wanted to get some advise as I was nervous a fungus or rot may be working its way into the plant.
