Help ID-ing pest/fungus/thing

Hello!
A few months ago, I encountered a weird "thing" in the mix of my cattleya. I didn't think to ask about it until now, so I have since gotten rid of it, but was curious if anyone has heard of it and could tell me what exactly it was. The best way I can describe it is, it was like long silvery wires/hairs with a black colored tip coming out of the bark. I pulled them out of the mix, and they have not come back. I assumed it was a fungus like thing because it came out of the bark, and I thought fungi needed light to thrive. But it was very bizarre and I hoped someone else here could ID it for me. Thanks in advance everyone!

Creature from the black lagoon? I hope it's limited to California! If you see a large, scary shape in the dark...run like Hades. Maybe it's your governor. Sorry I have no idea and I'm sure you don't appreciate the humor. Good luck!...run if gets loose. I'm with Norris, get a picture if you can before it starts sucking blood.

Without a pic my guess is it's just one of the many fungi feeding off your bark as it decomposes (fungi do not need light to thrive). It's most likely of no direct harm to your orchid but it may indicate your mix is getting old and needs replacing.

Haha yes it probably is a california thing; weird people and weird orchid ailments I should have taken a picture when it occurred, darn it. I don't even know what to search on google. "Weird orchid hairs?" lol. Oh well.
