Catching Insects

I just received the monthly newsletter from Norman's Orchids and thought this tip might be something others would be interested in.

Use Yellow Cups to Catch Insects- smear plastic yellow cup with regular Vaseline and place in your greenhouse. The yellow color will attract all kinds of insects and they will be caught in the Vaseline. This works for aphids and mites.

EEEwwww. Bugs. Do you do both sides of the cup, or just the inside?

What a great idea. Thanks Sandra for the info. I'll have to try it and see if it gets rid of
fungal gnats.

Yellow sticky traps have been around a long time. The vaseline in a yellow cup works just as good as anything else. You can go to the store (homedepot, walmart, lowes etc. ) and get pre-made yellow sticky squares. I put a square out for thrips in my roses. They like the yellow rose at the front of my house.

I think just the yellow part. Sounds like it's the yellow color that attracts them, and the vaseline makes them stick.

Talking What bugs?

For what it's worth. Here is my natural bug, snail, and slug control method.

They sometimes knock my cymbidiums over but it's OK as long as the slugs are gone.

I think more like stewed chicken. My chickens are probably tougher than beef jerky. BBQ won't do at all.

If you have a lot of slugs, ducks will outperform a chicken any day of the week.

Orchids, a greenhouse (to be) and chickens? Okay, I am now officially green with envy (but the nice kind, where I'm happy for you). I'm not even thinking about fresh eggs or no slugs (I hate slugs) ... I just like chickens. They're cute.

I had read this, too. I tried it with some bright yellow cups. I also have the yellow sticky cards. I got several on the sticky paper, but not ONE went on the cups. I left the cups there for 3 weeks, and not ONE! I don't know if they just didn't happen to land there, or if it wasn't sticky enough to hold them. I think it was the latter. I used plenty of vaseline, too!
