Vuylstekeara- Bud Blast?!?

My new Vuylstekeara 'Shady Lady' was in flower at the time I bought it; it has yet another developing spike, and it seemed all was well, till I noticed that the highest buds have a covering that seems to be drying out/turning brown. Is this bud blast, or am I being an orchi-hypochondriac?

If it's drying out and browning, I'd say it's blasting

It sure does look like bud blast, the same thing happened to me this winter with a dendrobium, oh well, it happens.

Yes it looks like a blast. Did you change the location of the plant after it spiked?

I had 01 Den that had spiked & about 15 cm long. My itchy hand went to change its old location, thinking it will be better for the plant - Bang boom it blast.

It may have been a draft. It was in the 40s and my cleaning lady was 'airing out' the area with my cases...sigh. Sure enough, both buds on the spike are out of hope. Oh well.

I've never grown Vuylstekeara but I did grow an Odontocidium that had a spike blast similar to your Vuylstekeara. Upon closer examination I discovered I had soft brown scale. Check your plant for hidden scale.

Well, here is an update to the saga; the lower bud was only slightly blasted, and ended up opening fairly well.

Congrats !!! Too bad that most of the buds blasted though It would have been a sight to see all the blooms. But hey one is better than none! I love the color! (You ought to put it in the contest)

It's beautiful. I think we all know bud blast. I have a Cattleya intermedia that had two buds. It's on my windowsill. The bud closest to the window blasted on a very cold night, while the other bud is getting larger and is beginning to show a little pink color. Sometimes it doesn't take much.
