What type of flies? House flies or fruit flies or gnats?

get a small magnifying glass and look at them. then google fungus gnats and see if they match up. if conditions are a little too wet they thrive. i don't think thay are really bad just annoying.but i might be wrong

I have a family of gnats living in my orchid as well. I have seen this type of fly hang around the soil of houseplants. They seem to enjoy their beautiful flowering home >:-(

They don't usually inhabit fresh mix. Maybe you are due for a repot. They like it where fungus grows, hence the name, and you don't want fungus growing in your mix. BUT, remember that sympodials, like Cattleyas, need to be repotted in season, when the newest growth is just starting a flush of new roots. Repotting at any other time could spell disaster. i rarely see the gnats except stuck to the sticky leaves
