| I am sorry for what happened to your orchid, kazjak. It looks like you have /had more than one problem. Aside from mites there could have been 'sunburn' , or so it appears to be. It does not look like frost-bite.

| I would not give up on your Den. Leaves on Dens are not terribly important appendages, especially this time of year. I'd cut off the spike with a sterile tool, and let the plant get very dry between watering, like when it is dormant. When you seen new growth from the bottom, start to water again. You will probably have a great growth next year, and plenty of flowers a year from now.

| Well I would like to throw my hand in and say that it has been chilly and rainy here, and my dens were outside. One got a spot of bacterial rot on a leaf, and some of the leaves looked like they were starting to do what yours did. I decided to just bring them in, as I could not keep as close an eye on them outside (with my schedule, I get to inspect the outdoor plants with a flashlight most days). You are close to my zone, and it may have been a little colder where you are? Give it a few days of some warmer air and good conditions, the parts of my leaves that were affected are turning back to a nice green, don't look quite as good as they should but turning green again. The one with the spots on it bears close watching though.

They take on the form of little birds, of lizards, of insects, a man, a woman, sometimes like a clown who excites our laughter. They represent the image of a lazy tortoise, a melancholy toad, an agile, ever-chattering monkey. Nature has formed orchid flowers in such a way that, unless they make us laugh, they surely excite our greatest admiration." Jacob Breynius |
