looks like someting near the base of the leaves

It looks like thre is something at the base of the leaves that is yellowish and hard and in different shapes. i was able to peel it off, but i noticed that the roots are turning brownish. I recently moved it near a different window. Could it be sunburn?

According to your description, it sounds like scale. But that's just a guess...could be something else. It will help if you post a picture.

Scale can be dislodged very easily by a nudge of a finger nail. Peeling it off doesn't sound like scale. Scale is always roundish, with different levels of bumpiness, from flat to hemi-spherical.
