Something is eating my phal leaves?

This phal is large and I thought very healthy, judging by the large amount of root growth and two big new leaves over the past year. Then the other night - literally overnight - suddenly it looks like something is trying to take a bite out of the plant. I don't think anything is actually eating the plant from the outside, but I am afraid that something is causing damage from the inside. Luckily since this first appeared a couple of days ago, it doesn't seem to have spread much if it all. Any ideas?

This plant lives indoors, I've never seen any snails in the house. So does the damage look like it's something external or going on inside?
