Snails!

Dear forumer,
I realised there are some snails (not sure the exact species it belong to, but they are the smaller ones) hiding in between my spagh. I am having difficulties to remove them as they are clever enough to hide between the roots.

I would like to ask if anyone could recommend a way to get rid of this pest?

THank you.

Regards,
Summerglow

Hi Summerglow, I usually pick them off using tweezers as I see them. I only see them on new plants not on ones I've had a while. I heard using snail bait or old beer near the pot will draw them out ( and hopefully not attracting new ones from the ground ) See if that will work..good luck

Hi Prisana,
I been using tweezer to pick them up one by one for some time... but they tend to hide among the roots... It seems to be an "never-ending" work... picking snails when I am free... *sigh*

Thanks for the info

Hi Summerglow. You can put diatomaceous earth or iron phosphate (Sluggo)
around the base of your orchids.

Don't bother with metaldehyde. You could try the upside down apple slice trick, and check under it first thing in the morning. haven't used it, but hear it works. I have used the bowl of beer with success, but be sure the bowl is big enough for your size snails/slugs, so they can't stretch out and reach the rim to escape. Not so big a problem with snails as with slugs. Used diatomaceous earth with success, but the stuff varies depending on manufacturer, and may not work from your source.

Slice a section of apple so that you can put the cut side down and the skin side up on the top of the mix. The snails are suppose to feel at home with food and protection, but check it early before they decide to go deeper into the mix.
