| Yes, it looks like most of the roots are dead. But there is some new growth. Looks kind of fungusy(sp) to me, but I've never had fungus so not sure! I have daconil, bayer rose care spray, worm tea , cinnamon and peroxide. Any advice? Will those help? I don't think other people want me on the road on my meds. Thanks, Gladys |

| Read the first reply in this thread. I don't know enough to make an educated guess with what's going on with your plant but the information I found regarding my dilemma a while back, may answer some of your concerns. P.S. Sorry about your health issues. From Sphag Back to Bark |

| Gladys, this plant is beyond help I'm afraid. I've just editied this sentence in. Having had as second look, you may, but a slim chance may, be able to seperate the left hand bulb with the good leaf off and try to save that piece. But it all depends on whether the mold, fungus or rot has gotten to that part as well.

| You see the big blob of roots on the one? When I unpotted it Those were completely wrapped around lava rock , looked like it had been rootbound in 4" pot. must have been there a long time. Then that big mass as in the whole plant was in a 6" pot surrounded by a bark mixture! Does that look like fungus? Will daconil help? Hurt? I'm at a loss. This is the worse mess I've ever encountered in my short time growing orchids. I just loved this plant! The blooms were Green with a cat paw in the center. (maroon) Thanks, Gladys PS> I'll toss it if need be but I'd really like to save some if possible. |

| Gladys, Don't toss this plant yet. Kevin (moderator) will be back on the board shortly. He's been away for a while but will return in a few days, if not, sooner. Also Jerry (owns a huge nursery and also a moderator) checks in a lot and both guys will have the best direction for you. 5 minutes later..... Gladys, I just looked at your plant which I didn't see prior and I must say, I'll be praying for you..... Last edited by sandra; 08-23-2007 at 11:20 AM. |

| Try sphag n bag, and with "a little luck" you may save it, but I wouldn't hold my breath just yet. (addition)Also, if it were mine I would may be even try a little rooting hormone on it to help it along after cutting the roots down to what I have shown in the picture.

| If the pieces you have saved have a new growth starting, don't use hormones, you will just inhibit rooting (in spite of what it says on the label). The new growths will produce roots soon, if they aren't so far along that they have already started the roots and they have already rotted off. If you have new growths but no roots, use sphag and bag for awhile until the new growths start roots. Daconil is a non-systemic fungicide. Probably won't hurt to use it, but it is not the best for your problem. Since your problem was bacterial, a fungicide is good to prevent further problems, but if you really want to get something good for bacterial problems, get some Phyton 27. It is systemic and good for bacterial and SOME fungal problems. I have found for some really serious fungal problems I had, Thiophanate methyl (Clearry's3336, Bonomyl,...) was the best . You can get both in small bottles from Oak Hill.

| Gladys, your orchid is now in good hands. If it is going to be saved, you can believe, it will be. I hope you are in good hands, too. I hate to hear of a sister Geek in pain. I'm so sorry. I hope you are up and about without the need for medication very soon! I will be thinking about you often until I hear an update. GET BETTER!! from the geeks, from me. |

| Well, I did manage to get it separated. I soaked it in peroxide before I read Cynthia's post. (thank you Cynthia, and others) The rest will have to wait to morning. I have it laying on a bed of damp spagh til then. I feel pretty confident this small piece will live., but it is only one bulb. Oh well, something to look forward too. Thanks for all the kibd thoughts friends. I really need them. back is in bad trouble from yrs. of construction work. DH is a recovering cancer patient and they found new polyps that they are watching closley. Yesterday my Mom was diagnosed with cancer. I'm taking on a 10 yr old GS she was raising. My plate is full! And I need time to take care of me too. God will provide! Thanks for the kind thoughts. Don't want your pity but the prayers would be nice! Gladys |
