Don't kill the snails

If you finds snails in your orchid pot, do not kill them . They can be wonderful creatures as pets, and they live long too . Here is a site from where you can learn to take care for a snail [url] Edited .

I already own a pet, but it's a good idea: you can easily ketch it if he runs away . I can't do that with my dog...

Snail and orchids don't go together !

Snails mean eaten leaves and flowers which mean expensive orchids don't look good which mean snails HAVE TO GO !

To put it simply a good snail is a DEAD snail, if you think differently you had better sell your plants as you don't deserve to have them !

Boy are you for REAL ???????!!!!!!!

Sorry, orchidlord, snails and slugs eat orchid flowers and I will not hesitate to "off" them. I'm going to try beer next. I'm told it really works well.

Dear Orchid Lord,

I understand your passion and respect for all living creatures. Snails though, need to live somewhere else, far away from orchids. If you saw a mountain lion roaming the streets, unless you didn't care whether you'd be on his menu for his main course, I'd say let him roam free but common sense dictates that danger is lurking, right? Kill the lion? Neh. He would just need to be guided back to his environment. Snails on the otherhand, are a little harder to see and by the time you do, it may be too late...your beautiful orchids may be their dinner and you wouldn't want that after all the labour and love you've given them. There are preventive measures to take to keep them away in the first place but unfortunately, sometimes it's just too close for comfort and aside from a shot-gun or anything messy , zapping them, although a very tall order unfortunately, is the only intervention.

Your heart is in the right place but you've got a responsibility here. It's either the orchids or the snails....

I am just wondering as to how a person so serious with orchids can put up with snails in the orchid pots.

Snails do more damage than good to orchids.

a snails roll in this world is to eat and destroy.

nothing more and nothing less

As for snails being kept for pets (each one to there own )

I would like to say that snails are good BUT I dont have one good word for them.

With orchids or with garden keeping all snails do is cost one money.

If you find some good sized ones, make yourself a little escargot! I'm sure they'll pick up an interesting flavor after eating orchid flowers.

Orchidlord, I'm sure you're thinking about keeping in separately from your loving orchids, maybe in a terrarium or something. I have a 6-year-old and he brings in all kinds of critters to raise as pets..slugs, catterpillars, earthworms, spiders, tadpoles, frogs, and some bug eggs I still don't know what they are. So I understand where you're coming from . They are interesting to watch and as long as they are not anywhere near me or my plants, I'm ok with it.

If I see a snail or slug near my precious plants, though, they will surely find themselves residing in a bird's tummy instead of my orchid pots ( when my son isn't looking ) I don't think there's a way to greenhouse-train them.

Terrestrial snails are all right in their place, but their place is NOT around any of my plants. However, Apple/Mystery snails are nice in aquariums. They're the only type that don't reproduce asexually, so you don't end up with 80 bajillion of the little buggers.

And it's funny watching a goldfish following one around, obviously thinking "WTF!?"

Anton: I did NOT say snails mustn't have TO GO. They have to go!!! outside or in a terrarium (if somebody has passion for them ) .
Kmarch, yes the beer method may work, but at least they will dye happy !
Fred: I didn't decide to put snails in my pots (that would be really stupid ). I have just found them there , and yes, they made me angry because they ate the buds i have waited for 9 months .
Of course I would keep snails in a terrarium -> orchids don't suffer.

Phew! Another post like this and I will be considered a spammer !

where in my post did I say that you put the snails in your pots ?

Quote orchid lord] I didn't decide to put snails in my pots.

I think that you have taken my words out of context.

I again will make this very clear.

Orchid_Lord, the way it came across in your post was that you were keeping the snails with your orchids, and that immediately send the alarm bells ringing, and I thought, "what is this kid thinking?!" hence my terse reply.

My mind couldn't comprehend an orchid grower cultivating snails, I kept getting an error message in the brain saying 'DOES NOT COMPUTE".

Hey orchid_lord, I think its great that you are considering the alternatives - good on you. However, like everyone else has said though, there is always the risk of coming home and finding them munching on your orchids . But if you are comfy with that...

Let me qualify by saying though that I am an absolute orchid newbie and (having only starting growing orchids about a month ago) haven't had a snail munch on my orchids yet so I don't know how annoying they can be first hand.

There is nothing like coming home after work, checking on your babies only find that you Den kingianum HAS NO LEAVES LEFT from a herd of snails.

Guess who WAS NOT a happy chappy ! Now, all around my cyms and the Den (which are on the ground) there is snail bait and ant sand everywhere.

Haven't seen a snail, slug or scale this year ! And that's the way I want to keep it !
