Max. tenuifolia issue

I've had this plant for almost 2 years and it's grown quite a bit since I got it, but I've not gotten it to bloom yet. I unpotted it and the roots aren't great, but there's a bit of good rootmass still there. But the problem I'm looking for help with is - a lot of the new growth has come in misshapen and with brown/black blotches usually where the shape changes.

Any thoughts on what this might be?

-Bob

I am no expert but my guess could be some time of virus/fungus. Check for for bugs, too. When was the last time you repotted?

Bob I don't know what causes this but sometimes I get it too. It is like when the pbulb is starting to grow something is wrapped around the small growth but then it continues to grow and leave the indentation. I've never had a problem with anything that does this.

Like Brooke...I get it too. It's not detrimental to the plant...certainly not fungal or bugs. I've also seen other Max tenu that have the same...I sometimes wonder if it's just not something that happens to some of them when they get larger and older.

Mine is growing like gangbusters and blooms beautifully so I know it's nothing more than unsightly.

As for your lack of blooms...give it more light. Mine sits in quite a bit of full sun during the Summer when it's outside. Even early afternoon full sun.

BTW -- I've seen a number of Coels that seem to do this too.

As for the blooming issue, I've had two separate vendors tell me that Max. tenuifolia is odd in that some plants bloom, and some plants just don't.

But I agree with giving it more light. Mine gets Catt level light as well.

Also, mine is very temp tolerant. From Gulf Coast summertime heat to down to almost freezing in the winter, it doesn't seem to skip a beat.

Thank you all for the advice. I asked someone at my last OS meeting and he said he has it too, but had no idea what it could be, so it looks like something that just happens.(?)

I repotted it last summer into a wooden basket with bark, but I don't think that keeps it moist enough. I just recently moved it into a smaller plastic basket with sphag. And I didn't see any pests when I repotted.

I'm hoping it'll bloom for me this year. I'm still working on getting the culture just right (for all my 'chids, not just this one), but it has been receiving good light for the last 5 months. I had it hanging in a tree this past summer, but I don't know that it got enough bright light, since I was afraid of burning it. So we'll see.
