What the heck are these creatures?!

What the heck are these guys? They are all over my vandas! I went outside to do my 'check before I leave' and noticed one on a seedling, flicked it off, then got to watering the others and noticed one scurrying away and then I see several more! I counted 9 on this one vanda!

They look like small brown lady bugs. We were attacked by a swarm of them at the car wash on Sunday. We're in Seneca, SC.

I've never seen them before! I've live here 2.5 years! Interesting! So if anything they're good cause I thought lady bugs will eat aphids (if there are any)... but after I posted this, I saw some on my mother-in-law tongue too!

They look like very young ladybugs. Before they mature, ladybugs look very strange. Ladybugs don't harm your plants. They are more interested in other little bugs, mostly aphids.
I welcome them!

I have no clue what they are - but if they bite you don't assume they are asian beetles - ladybugs bite too.

Lady Bug larva looks dramatically different...but that's not a LB larva. The pupae stage doesn't move so if they are scurrying it's not that either. I'd say...definitely not a Lady Bug or Asian Lady Beetle.

If they aren't damaging the plants then don't worry about them. If you're getting ready to bring those plants inside just hose the plants down really well and it'll knock them off. If it looks like they are in the pots...dunk and soak for awhile to chase them up.

Very curious indeed. I agree with Katrina, lady bug larvae are usually kinda spiky looking.
Do you have a link to a possibly higher res photo?

see if this works any better? The picture is bigger so hopefully it's a little easier to see what this little creature is

I have never seen this type of bug before. Definitely not a lady bug but I don't know if it is a good bug or bad bug. I'd unpot an orchid that has many of these guys and see if there is any damage or anything they might be eating (other insects, etc). Sometimes googling a description finds the answer. Books at the library, bug sites....
Hope you get an identity,

Thanks everyone... I may play it safe and do a 'drown' session on the vandas (they are hanging in baskets) however I don't think the one will fit into my bath tub!!

Appears to have a carapace so it must be a beetle of some sort.

Def not lady bugs. And if are stinky bugs my first action would be eviction in case they are some sort of bite and sucking bug don't ned damage to the plant. Dunk and drown I say!!! Get rid of em !!!! And repot after rising the roots use safers if you have to. Why wait until the damage is done. I'd send a pic of that to some bug people to identify maybe a nursery or agracultural place they may not belong here since you've never seen them before that makes them very curious....

Heres an update... I'm pretty sure that this is what this bug is... makes since... the temperature did drop, they appeared. Also, they were not around here this time last year.

Smelly kudzu-eating bug invades Alabama | al.com

I drowned the vandas late last night after bringing them in from the extra cool night, and they needed to be watered anyway. So while in the shower I held the biggest vanda up and they just started falling off... I shook the plant as hard as I could without breaking or bruising anything (OSS? Shaken orchid syndrome? lol) and I SWEAR about 30 of these things came off between my 4 hanging vandas... so if you live in the south... keep a look out! I have no noticed any damage to the 'chids.... but I'm not taking any chances! They will probably get another 'shake' session tonight... these little suckers can hang on pretty good.

Yep...looks like you found your culprit! Darn these foreign Stink Bugs! I was invaded by the Brown Marmorated this past Summer...they decimated my zucchini plants.

The BM's are tough because nothing...and I mean nothing we currently have in this country outside a solid squish w/your shoe...kills them. You think you've killed them but they are just playing dead. They go into a coma of sorts and this so-called coma allows their bodies to break down the toxins in the pesticide and about 7-10 days later they come back to life. Hopefully these little ones don't have this same ability.

If it were me, I wouldn't want those things getting loose in my house so I'd do that rinse and shake outside.

yeah I'm gonna have to find a way to haul them down to the car wash in our apartment complex. I really just can't wait till we move out of this apartment into a rental house.. The orchids suffer because I cannot offer better natural sunlight than what they are getting and I can't afford a lighting setup for all their needs. fingers crossed we find something soon.

Not a beetle after all then!

If the bug is not already known to be established in your area, I'd strongly suggest contacting the relevant govt. agency to advise them of your find.

Interesting article. Where it's in the beetle family I am wondering if something like Bayer 3 and 1 Systemic would work.

I have a problem with the Asian Lily Beetle. These little red beatles are very invasive. It loves Asiatic and oriental lilies and will go for hollyhocks and hostas when the lilies are all gone. I tried Sevin spray or dust and it worked but I found that by using the Bayer when my lilies started poking up out of the ground it worked like a charm.

will the seven dust hurt orchids? I think since it has gotten slightly cooler their numbers have gone down... in the article it pretty much says that they seek warmth and will try to get into your house (YIKES!) Like I said, when I did a 'drowning' session with some dawn soap and rubbing alcohol in the bath tub has gotten rid of any that were on the plant... The first night I shook maybe 30 of them off the big (almost 5' tall) vanda. Then maybe 10-15 on the smaller ones. When I did my 2nd drowning session, they stunk my bathroom up SOOOO bad, that I had to use air freshener to cover up their 'stink they made in my bathroom'!! hehe... and no way am I using my nice new vacuum to suck up them bugs... no way! What I do is when they finally surface in the water I use my 'shower rising cup' (that I use to pour water on the walls when I scrub walls) and scoop 'em up, and flush 'em! I DREAD putting the plants out every day... but I have not noticed any damage they have done (yet) and I've been dealing with them for maybe a total of 3 weeks now. I'm going to call the clemson college and tell them about these stinkies... They are not pleasant... I don't think we get the asian beetles here?

I don't know if Sevin would hurt orchids or not. Sevin comes in a powder and also a spray. The Bayer 3 and 1 comes in a liquid and you mix with water and I used it on my cyms this summer when they were outside and had no side effects from it.

If you haven't seen no damages you probably won't. Sounds like their more a PITA than anything. If they stink that bad, I wouldn't use my new vacuum either I'd get me one from a yard sale/thrift shop for this use

The Asian Lily Beetle burrows in the ground to hibernate for the winter and emerges in the spring usually I want to say in May just when the lilies start to pop up out of the ground. This is when I start the Bayer 3 and 1 applications. I have seen the these little red beetles eat my lilies right down down to just the stems. It took me awhile to find something to feed the little buggers to get rid of them.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Sevin doesn't hurt orchids, I use it the spray outside on all my plants (including seedlings) in the summer.
