Help

Well first I wish I knew about this site long ago. Great info on here from what I have read so far.

So about a week ago I noticed my Orchis starting to turn a light brownish color at the tip of it and now it is slowly working it's way down the stem. A little background on my orchid.

I got it on mothers day this year. It has sat next to a window in the kitchen for for a couple months and before was in small bay type window and got some direct sunlight. I have no idea if it can be saved or not. I hope it can, my husband bought it for me and I have been wanting one for years. I really want to save it so any help would be great.

Thank you
Tara

It looks like the flower spike is just going by. You can cut it off at the base or at a couple of nodes up from the bottom if it's still green at that point. You'll eventually get a new spike if you give the plant what it needs. Check out the Phalaenopsis culture sheet if that's what you have. It looks like a phal. from the picture but I can't be sure.

WELCOME!

That is a Phaleanopsis hybrid.
That looks fine too, the brown spike, is normal. They will produce new ones later on in their lives.
Cut the spike near the base of plant, and apply some cinnamon. Then consider repotting, and then care for it as usual, and wait for new blooms

Thank you all for the help, I cut the spike and put a little cinnamon on it. I will be repotting it this week.

Hello TDS2007...
I agree with the others, what you have is a hybrid phalaenopsis orchid I have attached a link to the AOS culture sheet. And from the likes of it you also have what I'm sure was once a beautiful flower spike full of beautiful blooms that has now finished blooming.

It's ok that the flower spike died, at this point cut the spike off as it will no longer produce additional blooms. As Phalcycle suggests now is a good opportunity to repot the plant and do some general maintenance. I've included a few other links to threads by other members here; I think will be of some value to you. Give them a read, feel free to follow up with any additional questions.

Thanks for all the help, we have cut the stem and are researching all the materials that we will need to repot, place a better medium and also deal with watering. Anyone have some recommendations as to what we WILL need and DO NOT need? Thanks!!
