brown, mushy leaf-Catt

I noticed some brown, slightly mushy leaves on my Catt. today...especially 1 leaf in particular. I didn't see these areas 2 days ago, so whatever the problem is has spread quickly or else I simply overlooked it at the time (which I seriously doubt. I don't think I could have missed seeing the leaves).

I bought the plant at a big-box store about 2 yrs. ago. After I brought it home, it had amost no good roots left after I cleaned them. I then got advice as to what I should do to hopefully re-root it, and the roots have grown quite good since then....not as good as some others that I have, but definitely much better than after I bought it.

It also has new growths, so I have been happy to see that it has progressed as well as it has....until day when I freaked!
I would appreciate it if someone could help me.
Vicki

I didn't know sunburn could be mushy ?? At least, the sunburn some of my other orchids have had in the past weren't. Maybe I've just not ran across a mushy one.

Thanks for your help!

Oh...so what do advise that I do? Not knowing which it is...sunburn or bacteria, would you treat it for bacteria, just to be safe? Or would that not be the best idea? As for some treatment for bacteria, I don't know what's best. Any suggestions? You....anyone?
Thanks!
Vicki

Hi vicki,
Has it stayed the same so far or has it gotten worse? How much light is it receiving and what about air flow around it? To my understanding it can take time for a sun burn to show up but the mushy part has got me wondering if it is bacteria you can cut off those leaves if your not sure since they are mushy and treat the plant for a bacterial infection.
Have any other plants around it showing any signs of this? I'd isolate it just in case.

Hi,
I've already taken your advice...cut the affected leaves and areas off, then treated the wounds with cinnamon because they were indeed mushy. One last question (I hope you don't mind). At this point, do you think that I should still treat it with something for a bacterial infection, or just leave it as is?

None of my other plants show signs like this, but I will keep it away from them for awhile.
Thanks for your help,
Vicki

I became more concerned that the problem was an infection of some kind, so I cut the leaves and affected areas off then treated the wounds with cinnamon powder. So far, whatever the problem was/is has not spread. I'm now wondering whether I should still treat the orchid with Physan (or other treatments that you suggested) or simply leave the orchid as it is now.

update..still prob.

After reading your advice, I cut all of the leaves off that had any visible signs of a problem....I did this last Friday. I then dusted the cut areas with cinnamon powder. Afterwards, I kept the orchid inside because I wanted to monitor it before I moved it back into my greenhouse with the other orchids. This morn....3 days later, I found another leaf with the same problem....a mushy brown area. This leaf looked fine last Fri. I'm assuming the problem is either bacterial or fungal (??) but I would appreciate your opinion. What do you think the problem is, and how do you advise that I treat it? The picture of Catt-1a is after I cut the leaves Friday. The photo of Catt-1b is of the new affected leaf that I found this morn. (By the way, the reddish-dust is cinnamon powder.)
