Hi
We recently bought 3 Blooming Aussie Dens and this morning I noticed some weird spotting on some of the leaves which were oozing a liquid on the underside, any ideas???

Yuck, that doesn't look good.

However, you will have to wait til someone more expert comes along.

Hey Bernie,
Thanks for that, we do actually have that, we printed it up and went through it all. Been in town to stock up on fungicides etc. Still trying to get our hands on some cinnamon extract. So far our only means of getting it, is to go and see a natrapath and get his permission for the health food shop to sell it to us.
Can anyone explain why it is so difficult to get cinnamon extract here in Australia? or are we not looking in the right place?

I just use the powdered cinnamon found in the herb sections of any grocery store. It works for me.
As for the marks on the orchid, my guess is fungal. Chances are this leaf will fall off.

Australia has some pretty extensive import rules and regulations. The cost to send an inexpensive bottle of extract would be quite high...it's not just the cost of shipping. Also...if it's not available w/in the country (any country) chances are you'd never get it past customs.

A word to the wise for anyone who has never done any shipping outside the US....sending products to other countries is so NOT the same as sending between states in the US. Always, always, always check the government websites for the individual rules and regulations. Items getting confiscated could be the least of one's worries should the item/product be banned or regulated in some way.

Thanks Katrina,
I was going to ask him about their regulations or to check on that and if it wasn't a arm and a leg to in cost to ship. also I remember a recipe or 2 mentioned in the sticky "the best stuff ever under pests and diseases in the forum how to make cinnamon extract. That was another thing I was going to tell him if he pm'ed me.
But I'm really glad you brought this up, I appreciate it.
Thanks

Is the cinnamon extract you can buy in grocery stores the kind you use? I bought some, but it is not straight cinnamon, it has some other ingredients.

We got some today (cinnamon extract) from health food store (via natrapath).
We did get some other fungicide stuff yesterday, I will have to go and have a look as I can't remember if we bought Mancozeb fungicide, I know we were looking at it.
Steve will remember, sorry my short term memory is going through a phase, hopefully it will improve soon LOL
Emmaye, I saw the recipes for extract yesterday, I am considering giving it a go. 100ml cost us $20 good thing you don't need to use a lot. I also checked on the net and found another recipe which they say only needs to be left for a minimum of 2 weeks. Although I imagine the longer it is left the stronger the brew.

Steve or Sonia, I was hoping you had Mancozeb, it would have saved you time and money chasing cinnamon extract.

This problem is back and ona larger scale,It obviously has to do with cooler temps and high humidity as this is what we have had this last week.
Could this be phytophthora fungal issues

mancozeb should work fine, i usually trimmed off the anterior portion that is affection, spray the plants with mancozeb then dust the cut edges with mancozeb powder. i would continue treatment of the affected plant once weekly for 3-4 weeks.

Have treated yesterday. It is throughout the Onc alliance orchids and a few Aussie Dens.
I need to identify what it is and phytophthora seems to be the closest I have found in photos, any ideas??

I always get a bit of this when the weather is wet. You will lose those leaves - too late for them.

Not really sure if it helps completely but plenty of calcium and potassium in the diet may help develop more fungal resistant tissues - but it needs to be taken up as the plant is putting out the growth (formed growths won't uptake any more calcium).

In aid of this and as a very mild antifungal you can spray with a highly diluted spray of hydrated lime. I get the lime paste from asian grocers as it is super fine (ok for sprayers). Maybe two pea sized pieces in two litres of water.

I used to buy cinnamon extract from a pharmacy. Its now available in all kinds of stores here, but you might want to check out your local Rx.

Doesn't look like Phytophthora to me, unless the black areas are spreading like wildfire.

If you're unsure, get some "Subdue" AKA Mefenoxam or "Aliette", made by Bayer AKA Aluminum tris (O-ethyl phosphonate). Those are both marketed for Phytophthora/Pythium and are soil drenches though. The latter I think can be applied as a foliar spray.
