snails!

argh I brought some plants in from outside and the next day I start finding little snails all over my antheriums..didn't notice them on the orchids.
What do snail bites look like? says they eat the roots and like the bark from what I can find..Now I'm worried about a freekin snail invasion.

and no not the snail bites fishes eat

has anyone here tried this natural remedy for snails?

"A recent test confirmed that spraying with a 1% caffeine solution (strong brewed coffee has about .5% caffeine) will kill 65-90% of snails present in potting medium without harming orchids. This can be done by spraying or by pour-through. Caffeine can also be purchased in purified form for agricultural use and mixed with water for this purpose."

them orchids all try to leave the pots and mounts anyway. If you give them coffee they might try to run around the house too

I'm laughing so hard I'm tearing up here lol .
I've never personally heard of the coffee solution but from what you said lol I'd be afraid be very afraid my orchids would probably climb the walls or look for some biscotti cookies to go with that coffee lol (got a visual of them having a party and dancing around the house lol.
Thanks I needed a good laugh

Hi Kelly, You might consider moving into heliculture, (snail farming). You would not incur much expense since you already have considerable numbers of snails to begin the farm. Snails are easy to rear and only require plenty of food in the form of vegetables and fruit to become a delicacy for gourmets of the best restaurants. If all goes well you could expand the business and export your product to Europe and Asia and be the first global supplier. Just think of it-- KELLY'S SUPER SNAILS TO START YOU SALIVATING-- I can see the sign in large letters in all the major cities of the world!! Good luck!!!

For bush snails (the very, very small snails that are about the size of a lentil) or garden snails, I use insecticidal soap, which I make myself (2 parts water, 1 part rubbing alcohol, 1 tbs+ dish soap or Dr Bronner's liquid peppermint soap; you can add cinnamon extract to this is you wish as a disinfectant for any injuries to the plant tissue snails may have caused) and flush through the media for bush snail or spray directly on garden snails. I have only had bush snails in two plants I've bought, but this solution literally dissolves them; I fight garden snails more often than I want to (which is ever), and this spray kills them instantly without harming the plant at all.

I use 91% rubbing alcohol without any damage to my plants and I tend to mix it pretty strong for spraying on garden snails; most people use 70%. I'd avoid using it on seedling roots or very sick, weak plants, but as I've mentioned, I've never had a problem using it on anything (but anecdote is not the plural of data!). I would definitely suggest using 70% for flushing pots with bush snail.

I've heard of the coffee thing ... but I'm not wasting good coffee on snails!

i use coffee on my sunflower but you have to be careful as it is acidic. It could kill orchids or the the kind you of plant you have. Use sparingly.
As to if it kill snail. Nah..... I have lots of snail in the garden. Does not deter them.
Beer trap Nah....

My ten fingers Best!!!! My garden boots is best at flattening them! I like the sound of crushing shell.. Music to my ears - the squishing noise.

A saucer of good old Aussie beer works good here
They can't resist it, and drown
Not XXXX Gold though as its too valuable to waste. VB is fine as it's not drinkable
Nah any beer will do

I have tried coffee grounds and crushed egg shells. The egg shells seemed to work better.

G'Day R-Kid Kelly

Buy a duck or a blue-tongue lizard, either one will work.

Cheers
