Something wrong with plants?

I got some arial shoots from some sort of Dendrobium from AON. They are in bud at the moment, but noticed the leaves started to yellow out. They receive alot of direct sunlight which i think is causing the problem. I watering once every few days and fertilizing once every fortnight.

Also another type of Den. but its losing all its leaves in winter, is this normal? First time keeping Den. so need alot of help.

Thanks guys

I think you are right with your own diagnosis. That first pic in particular looks to me like sunburn, and the last looks as if it has been barbecued.

definitely too much sun for the first 4 picture , but it seem that this plant is Dendrobium anosmun (picture 5) is going to flower. dont water (in my weather I water all the time) they still flower. But i feel this plant is a little too small to flower. There seem to have flower bub form now. Either way, congratulation.

I feel the plant is too small and seem a little too dry. On second though , U might want to water the plant and put it away from direct sun.

DG i agree with you. When i recieved the plant from the grower, it was starting to yellow. Once winter kicked in, it lost its leaves fast! And now most is gone. How often should i water the plant? Its a netted pot so the water just drains straight out. Its never been in direct sunlight, just in the morning.

I have 2 dens. It's summer here for me and the temps have been in the 70 and 80's during the day and 50's at night. Sounds too me like the plant was shipped bare root. The netting is doing nothing to hold in water for the roots.

I use Better Gro orchid mix from Lowes and my chids seem to love it. Have also started using some coconut chip bark to help retain moisture with the bark and it's woking pretty well. I would repot, and find a place that gets indirect sunlight and water when it starts to dry out. Dens are tough little buggers. Be patient and you will be rewarded

I agree with everyone else on the first three pictures. As for the 4th, many Dens do drop their leaves in the winter. If you had a name for it, it would help to determine if this is one of them, but from the way the canes are, it looks like it might be. If it is one of them, then this is normal. And they take light waterings during their dormancy period. The canes should remain green, and shouldn't shrivel too much. If they start to shrivel a lot, I would water it a little more. The way it's potted looks ok as well. I personally like the net pots, I can see how dry it is, as well as condition of the roots.

I agree to sunburn. In the first three pictures, the purple on the leaves indicate more than optimum light. By the same token, I see three bloom spikes. The last picture shows a plant that may possibly be deciduous and I agree with rcb, light waterings during dormancy. I call them baby sips. If the canes start to shrivel, mist them. As rcb also says, the canes should remain green. In the wild these plants live in periods of dry conditions but a lot of humidity. Once you see buds or new growth, gradually resume water and fertilizer.

Den anosmum, I think, flowers from bare canes.

I have a pierardi that also flowers from bare canes, and is also dropping all it's leaves.

Then again, I haven't owned it that long, so maybe it is also crook?

The other's I would say is a combination of too much sun and maybe too little water.

G'Day Mango

I copied a site where the same question was asked about your Den. Anosmum Orchids: Den, anosmum, winter lows, humidity range
I don't think I am breaking any rules by posting it, if so am sure the moderators will delete, but seems like good advice. Also from reading it mentions the backgroud of this orchid is Superbum, so should be deciduous.

Cheers
Bernie

I would move the plant out of the sunlight and next to the fence. Dens like to be next to a tree or rock to protect it from the hot sunlight and air. most dens dont be hanging like a Strap leaf vanda.
