Hi orchidbeginner, welcome to the forum. What type of orchid do you have? Most if not all orchids require a certain amount of light, so more info is needed. But generally, no light is not a good thing for your orchid. Can you put it in a window, maybe facing east? Also, what is it growing in, moss, bark? After 5 posts, you can put up pictures which will also be helpful. I'm sure other geeks will be along soon with more help for you.

Hi, orchidbeginner. You're quite right that all the leaves turning yellow and dropping off at once is a bad sign for your orchid. Syndy is right, we need to know what kind of orchid it is, tho I suspect it's a phal. You can find out what it is by visiting the American Orchid Society website and checking out the culture notes. At the top of the notes is a silhouette drawing of the orchid. Check out those pictures against your orchid, and that will tell you what kind you have. (Then download and print up the culture notes) It could be overwatering, underwatering, or stem rot. Any of these might produce the leaf and flower loss. The only way to know whether it is overwatered, is to pull it out of the pot and checking the roots. Syndy's advice is good: orchids need light. A dark room, and a room with no direct light is not the place to display them. They also need air movement. And you need to find out what it is and read some culture notes to find out how to grow it. New people usually don't know where to go to get good advice on how to grow their orchid. The best place to start is the American Orchid Society website and the Canadian Orchid Congress website. |
