Southern Blight/Collar Rot on Phal??

Hi everyone! I'm not sure what this is but could it be Southern Blight/Collar Rot? Everything was fine two days ago and this afternoon when I did my walk around the orchid area I noticed the leaves had turned a mustard yellow/red color. The crown is also yellow. I separated it from the others and brought it inside, will also spray will fungicide tomorrow. Is there anything else I should do? I live in South Florida and my orchids sit on a tree bench under a large mango tree. Thanks for your help! Thanks Reg22 for helping me identify what could be the culprit!

No problem. Your dog photo-bombed you!

Do you guys agree with the "working diagnosis?"

Sorry, can't help with the original question but - LOVE the doggy!

Is summer in full swing in Florida? Here in Vancouver it feels like back to shivering November or something, it's even snowing on the mountains....

It's not summer yet but sure feels close to it! It was muggy and hot today.

Southern blight is a fungal infection and you can see the fungus at the base of the plant from the little orange toadstools surrounding the area. It looks like you have a bad case of stem rot which is the same as crown rot but it starts below the crown at the bottom and goes up to the crown.

If you have drug store peroxide, or alcohol or brown Listerine (none of the flavored Listerine) pour it into the crown and stem. Using a fungicide might also help. You will probably lose the bottom two leaves fairly soon but if you can stop the rot before it gets to the crown the plant can be saved.

It is surprising that growing outside in FL in LECA with the constant breeze you could get this but sometimes it just happens.

Good luck - Brooke

Thanks Brooke! I've never had this happen before but there is always a first time. I keep most of my orchids in LECA or mounted since it seems to keep them happy in my conditions. I poured peroxide into the crown and stem. Let's see what happens.
