Unhappy Phal in might be dying!

I have a Phal which I have apparently been over watering. I recently repotted it and after about a month cut and set a baby in with the original. I then noticed all the roots on the original plant had turned brown and dead, except for 2 little 1 and 1/2 roots. The leaves are limp and yellowish and the baby now has pale spots on the leaves. My son gave me this plant for Mother's Day just before he died and I am, frankly frantic. WHAT can I do??

Yes, I add my deepest sympathy on your very sad bereavement and hope the Phal can be rescued. Do send those 4 more posts (they can say anything or nothing) after which you can send us a photo of your orchid. In the meantime, it may be an idea to remove all the soggy roots, taking care not to injure the remaining ones. I think you could then repot it in a small pot - someone else might explain how/why orchids seem to like small pots! The sooner you can get a photo sent the better.

I sent you instructions for posting pictures by private message - hope it helps.

Posting several more times just means posting a total of 5 or 6 times so that you are allowed to post a photo. I am not sure why this is necessary, but it is.

This is all you need to do (see next posts):

I just posted this in another thread (or at least something similar) but thought it would be useful here as well. Even with small roots that are 1 to 1 and 1/2 inches long, there is a good chance for recovery, though it may take a while.

I agree with Mary Paton that part of what you may need to do is re-pot again, and I would suggest doing that soon. However, pictures will help us confirm what is going on. I would suggest a coarse medium, such as a bark-based medium intended for orchids.

The following may be useful for re-potting:

Recommendations from American Orchid Society:
Repotting an Unhealthy Orchid
http://www.aos.org/Default.aspx?id=616
AOS Culture Sheets Culture sheets for various types of orchids

Instructions from Vian, one of the members here (she presents a good step-by-step):
http://www.orchidgeeks.com/forum/new...an-orchid.html

After re-potting, here is a good suggestion to keep moisture at the right level:
http://www.orchidgeeks.com/forum/orc...f-orchids.html When you water, try to water the growing medium and roots, try to avoid water sitting in the leaves, especially the center.

Hi Catt!
Thanks for posting the link to the AOS video. I'm ashamed to admit that I've never watched any of the videos, although I often post up the link for the culture sheets. That's a really clear explanation of what to do. I plan to watch more of them--you never know when you will find a perfect nugget of information!

Hi Fishmom!

The AOS information is incredibly useful and difficult to improve on (though I think Vian did a pretty good job in her repotting instructions).

Bubbie's Orchid

Four months before he left us, and OH! what a battle he fought, tougher than any war he fought. He gave me an orchid for mother's day. I have 5 children, and he was the only one that never forgot me on mother's day. I've tried so hard to keep this treasure going, but I followed the wrong advice. I hope I'm doing the right thing and now I can post pictures. Please, someone tell me if I'm doing this right. I got an email how to down load pictures, but I hope these posts allow me the privilege. If I'm doing it wrong, where is the place to post? Sorry I don't know.

Oh dear, I don't think your photos have come yet and it is quite important for someone to see how that precious orchid is doing. Your son sounds very brave and special. One tip I can offer is that my usual browser just went blank every time I tried to upload a photo but when I finally tried Firefox (which isn't my browser of choice) it worked. I have no idea why! Once the more knowledgeable geeks see it they will help

Unhappy My son's last mother's day gift

After much research I believe that my real problem has been is over watering, plus I cut off up growing roots with unsanitary tools, not knowing what they were. I believe this has introduced a virus, as I now have limpish, pale green/yellow leaves with white spots. No pests just pale white spots and streaks. I have no way of downloading a picture, but may be able to try with a friend. I'm sick and discouraged. I've put it in an eastern sunny morning window filtered with a sheer curtain. I water it when moss is dry. The medium I was formerly told to use is a mixed medium with white balls of some nature, some wood chips and little white pieces of something and some moss mixed in. All I do now is hope and pray.

Well, it sounds as if it still has life! I am overseas just now with little time for internet but should be back in Scotland in 11 days and will get active on the forum again. Try to keep it calm and alive till you can get photos sent. Then someone will give you a lot more help. It clearly has a plan to survive.

Thank you for raising such a wonderful son who served so bravely. I'm very sorry for the loss to you and all those who knew him. Is there an orchid club, orchid enthusiast, or college/university horticulturist in your area who could offer "hands on" advice with this special plant and set your mind at ease? The folks here are very knowledgable, but pictures really are worth a thousand words in these circumstances. We're all pulling for you and your precious orchid. *hugs*
