New growth on new growth...?

Hello,
Long story, short version: I repotted my very sick catt two months ago, treated root rot, fungal infections, bacterial infections and even a happy beetle eating it. (long version here: Sick Catt! Is there any hope? :'( she's quite a survivor!) Now she's growing lots of new roots and seems to be happy with all my care. For a while the development of younger growth stopped, so I thought it was because she was trying to focus her energy on growing roots... but a couple days ago I noticed that there were two new growths coming out of... new growth? For me, she's saying like:"ok I think those two young guys are going nowhere so I will replace them with two new ones" but would it mean that the replaced ones will die? Or they will just live and stay small like they are now...? I mean I love that she's trying to reorganize herself but I want to make sure that I should not be concerned if some new parts of the plant die... and I also want to know what she's trying to tell me! Will she end up being a super mutant catt after all that she's been through? Hopefully not!

It is possible that the orchid's first flush of new pseudobulbs stopped growing early because the orchid is recovering and it was set back a little. These new growths will likely, then, be larger as your orchid has recovered.

I am glad that I could help you. Now, just to confuse you a bit, I do have a Cattleya purpurata seedling that sometimes does put out new growths while the other 'new' pseudobulbs are still maturing. I am going with my first answer, though.

I've had Catts in the past that experienced stunted growth with new leads. They did just fine, and continued on growing. Stunted growth is caused when the plant is under stress, either because of a weakened root system or insufficient light or too extreme of temperatures, deficiency in nitrogen, or a combination of these. Just give it proper culture and time to recover and you should see the growths return to normal sizes.
