mold or fungus on cattleya?

uh oh, my mom's favorite orchid seems to have a problem. it's a Blc Chunyeah cross of some kind. it has developed this white fuzz at the base of the pbulbs and on parts of the leaves as well. it's potted in bark and the bulbs were shriveling pretty badly, so i encouraged her to water more, but this started happening. i read frostychic's post from july about the mold and this looks similar to me. what can we do for this? should i try hydrogen peroxide? the plant is putting out several fat new roots, so we're going to repot it into s/h next week since my mom doesn't like having to water/soak the bark so often. but in the meantime, what can we do for the white fuzzies?

I think they are mealy bugs. Have a really good close look, and give them a poke. If they move, they are mealies.

G'Day Tangers40

Agree with Tansy mealy bugs, wash off with alcohol on Q-tip, that kills them.

G'Day Olive Cook S/h stands for semi-hydroponic, there is a complete section at the beginning menu of the forum, makes good reading. And ask as many questions as you need I have and still do.

Cheers
Bernie

I agree with Tansy, but by the looks I think your gonna need more than a Q-T
to remove them. It will take several treatments to get rid of them. Don't forget to look/treat the other orchids near that one. You may want to check all your chids inc. the little clip thingies, especially on the inside.

Yes, it's neither mold nor fungus but mealy bugs. Fortunately they are fairly easy to get rid of with a few applications of insecticidal soap according to directions.

hmmm, i don't think they're bugs of any kind, to be honest. nothing moves when poked at. it's definitely a fuzzy white growth. she says she has wiped it off before, then it returns when watered again. does a mealy bug create a white fuzzy growth? i've never dealt with them, that's why i'm asking.
