Black spots on E. tampensis buds

I have an E. tampensis that is in bud right now. It's a first for me, and the buds on the oldest spike all have black spots towards the tips. The plant is growing in a basket with very little medium. Any guesses as to what it is, and what I should do to correct it next time?
