Ants Attack!

One of my vandas had some watering problems, so I was paying special attention to it. One day I noticed a big ant walking around the vanda, and I thought it was normal, so I just blew it away. The next two days I kept spotting ants, without paying any special attention. Until I noticed some wood dust like powder below a stub of an old flower spike. I broke the stub in half, and found ant larvae inside. I proceed to check out the whole plant, and noticed another stub with wood dust going out. I manage to count up to four different ants living in the vanda.
I applied ant poison in several leaves, and left it overnight. Next morning I used a hose to wash the poison out of the plant (I was worried it could burn the leaves). This was 4 days ago, and since then I have not seen any other ant around.

Some pictures are attached.

Regards,
JC

Well that's a new one!
Hope your vanda recovers from its ordeal.

Sorry to hear about your ant troubles. Another thing you can do is soak the pot in water for several hours. In fear of drowning, they'll jump ship.

carpenter ants. I use some sacrificial method to protect my plant from this ants. A plain cheap wood (none pine wood) wet constantly will attract them. Kill them after some time , throw the wood away.

I am not sure what kind of ants I got. But you can see them in the pictures. Here I put a red circle around the ant to show it better.
I think digi is right about it being a carpenter ant.

JC
