my first wood mount(s)

since the two phals i made into "floating" mounts seem to be doing really well, i figured that it was time to try setting up a wood/log mount.........plus i had 4 phals that needed some TLC and re-potting so i went on a log hunt....

once the weather get better i will go hunting for some freshwater driftwood, but for now i went to a specialty aquarium store that i know carries grape wood......while it was a bit pricey i did find two good sized pieces that looked to be perfect for the task and fit in the budget i set.

i think the hardest part of this project was figuring out how i was going to make use of the pieces...they are really knarly and knobby and i wanted to make sure that the structure was balanced. After some twirling and spinning, i bound the two logs together with hemp twine and then grabbed my 20g stainless wire. i used the wire to very firmly attached the two pieces to each other, as well as make a sturdy hook for hanging.
next i grabbed the 4 phals i wanted to use. All of the ones i am using are in less than perfect shape, but it made them easy to work with and hopefully when they start growing they will shape-up with the wood nicely.

pic 1- the two logs
pic 2- the two logs joined
pic 3 and 4- shows the "done for now" mount...i may add some more glass beads and i think there may be some more room for a few more small plants.......after all it is almost 3ft tall

I love how mounts look. It just makes orchids look like they are in their enviroment than in a boring 'ol pot. This is awesome looking.

OMG! How nice! You did a fantastic job! Beautiful arrangement. they look like they've been growing there for a long time naturally. That's the effect that I love with mounts.

it's kinda funny you say that......when i was positioning them i found them each a spot that i almost didn't have to tie them into, for a natural advantage (plus it was nice not having to hold and attach them at the same time).
it took a bit of time to get them into 'their spot' but the result was well worth it.

That's a really nice mount. I never would have thought to put 2 mounts together, but the way you have done it and mounted your orchids really makes quite a display. I am already thinking I will have to try this this coming spring with some of mine.
