A spike I like!!

I've been growing Phal. gibbosa mounted on a piece of wood for a few month, now. (It came mounted) I wasn't crazy about the wood that it's mounted on...Looks like a piece of 1 x 3 When I got it, there was a tiny tear where the newest leaf was emerging. Since then, the leaf has grown, so that's why the one leaf looks mangled! I was going to let it get stronger, and then re-mount it in the spring to a more attractive mount. I was looking at it closely the other day, and there in the middle is a tiny spike! I'm so excited!!! I can't wait to see this one in bloom! The one photo has my pointer finger in the picture to give you some perspective on the size of this little pip-squeek!

Congrats. Patti. That looks great. Can't wait to see it bloom. I know what you mean about the wood plank. I've gotten a few mounted like that off e-bay. I think they are roof shingles or something. Very ugly.

What a nice surprise!!

The wood plank...I have a couple on that stuff too (ebay purchases like Solay) and I think they are cedar shims. Very construction looking to say the least. Unfortunately, my ghost orchid is on a piece of that stuff and I'm scared to death to remove him.

If your ghost orchid is ding well, I wouldn't move it either! I had one that finally bit the dust a few weeks ago. I tried like heck to keep it alive. This Phal came from Oak Hill. I love their plants. I just wasn't crazy about the wood. I guess it wouldn't be very cost effective to mount everything on fancy stuff!

Im jealous I have had 3 Phal orchids that I cut the spike all the way to the bottom and still have yet to see a new spike. The plant itself is fine producing new leaves and roots. How long will it take???

Patienly waiting,
Bettina

Most Phals bloom once a year. Depending on their genetics, some bloom more than once if the conditions are right. Phals are always growing something, but basically they go through an unpredictable cycle of growing leaves, roots and then flowers. Learn to enjoy the roots and new leaves; they are a marvel in themselves!!! I have a Phal right now that has a few flowers left on an old spike, a keiki on that spike, a new spike, tons of new roots and two new leaves coming out. It is growing everything it possibly can all at once, so there is no telling what your Phal has planned for you!

The good thing about Phals is when they do bloom the flowers last for months and months.

Thanks... It's so little....I baby it. During the Ice storm, when I was evacuating tender plants to my mothers' house,(she had heat!) I left it home by mistake. When we got back home, there it was on the table. I slept with it next to me so it would stay warm!
