My mini log in a pot

I got a Bulb. frostii, so I decided to mount it. I saw the other log in a pot, and thought that was cool, so here I have one too. It's small, the pot is an 8 inch pot. I'm thinking of adding one more plant on the cross branch, possibly a Dend. unicum(to go with the mini theme). I'm also looking for a bigger log for outside. This one is pretty soft wood, so I don't want to leave it outside. It was pretty bug eaten, but I baked it in the oven, so it has a nice roasted wood smell too!

Good looking log in a pot. I think I will try that too to mount some of the small Catts. I will use drift wood instead. Thanks for sharing.

I love it! It's a mini version of FlaCo's! Nice mount... Good luck with it, and keep us posted!

I've found two possible plants for it now, so when I get them, I'll add a new pic.

I'm thinking of doing a rock one for some paphs I am getting, most of which are found on limestone cliffs. Something like a living rock sculpture.

Cloudswinger, now your talking. I thought of that too but don't have the know how to do it. I would love to see a rock orchid garden. Very cool. As soon as you do it let us see. That's going to look awesome. Especially if it's a huge rock with a bunch of chids clinging off of it. I'm imagining it now. Beautiful!!!!

I've still debating the rock size, because it becomes very heavy very quickly. I like portability. The huge rock would be cool, but would have to be a permanent fixture somewhere outside. That would be a good focal point for a water garden. I have a possible spot for something like that, but I'm going to start with something more like the size of a 10" pot, and I still haven't figured out how the plant attachment will work either. I'm going to a rock supply place tomorrow to see what I can find. It may be a while before the right rock shows up.

Take your time finding the rock.- You don't want to rush it. I'm sure you'll know the right rock when you see it!

I guess you could still use fishing line or nylon to hold the orchid until it adhere to the rock. I can't wait to see it when you finally do make one. Thanks and good luck.

Ok, here's a Paph. henryanum on a rock. It's only been a few days, so I don't know how things will go yet. I had a few more rocks, but wasn't able to get more lithophytes.

And I've added a Dend. aggregatum to the mini log, above and kind of 45 degress to the Bulbo. (you can see the leaves at the bottom right)

Cloudswinger - I love what you have done with your Paph.

What other types of Paphs were you looking to use on your limestone? There are so many that like limestone.

I want to eventually put a couple of miniature orchids on a 5lb hunk of crystal I picked up in Georgia. I think it would be cool to have orchids growing on it, but it will have to wait until after I move.

That's beautiful. I love the rock. Now lets see how it does. I just picked up some drift wood over the weekend to try my own mounting on a log experiment.

I absolutely LOVE the log in a pot! I never would've thought of that.

Correct me if I'm wrong...on top of being soooooo cool looking...the pot w/rocks could act as a humidity tray, right?

Thanks for sharing such a great idea!

I"m sure the pot could act as a humidity tray, although I haven't used it as such just because I'm in S. Florida. I'd probably want a pot without a drainage hole though.

I'm trying to limit my collection to mostly Vietnamese species, so my paphs are limited to about 22, and then maybe 4-5 are lithophytes, and then I got 2-3 but then the other ones were a bit bigger and the roots didn't seem to work as well for the mounting I wanted to do. So it's not that there aren't more types of paphs that would work, it's just within my limitations.

Ok, I have to update this project. I Just remounted the two bulbos because the log I used rotted. The string holding the Paph rotted and the paph died from neglect. It was fine while it was on the rock, but once the back side got exposed to air, it didn't retain enough water and I was too distracted with my mom's health issues to deal with it promptly.
