Thanks Vivi. It doesn't look that pretty for a fresh mount but I needed to as much tape as possible to hold spag because gravity wouldn't comply. Just wait until the plants grab and I can let them loose...those mini spike with yellow flowers will look great!

I love it. Trying to get into more mounts now, since everything that was growing to my tree froze this past winter. Lost 10 of 12 phals, and a bunch of dens. Lesson learned, mount to moveable things, not immovable tree!

Damien You will find that mounted this way you can move the Phals to Cattleya light levels. The top (Now) of the leaf is not light sensitive. I once had a Phal and an Oncidium next to each other at a show and when the sun shifted, the Onc was cooked and died and the Phal did not even develop red on the leaves. I find it takes about 18 months to develop enough roots to hold. (and this was a large Phal.) The Naples Nights I mounted in the control plants for the hybrid project has not done anything)

Jerry the Naples Night you sent...is doing very well and now i see roots growning up. They haven't grabbed the wood...but I see plenty and healthy. Great little plant.

| Now I am back to two...the new on almost died on me but I took care of the fungal attack. The new mount is down to one leaf but a new on is coming. The roots are finally pushing out. These mounts have taken forever compared to the upside down pot ones on my other post. I wouldn't know why...but just an observation.

I mounted my first Phal, a gigantee, to see if it would help after killing a few. It is producing a bloom spike. Now I am ready to mount some more, won't hurt because I have always had problems growing them.

I started mounting Vandas on cypress and they seem to like it, they are gorwing well. I have a word of warning - when you are cutting a dead pseudobulb, DO NOT get in a hurry and forget safety. Sat I was in a hurry and cut one that I saw, had my left hand behind to make sure that I had the correct one, did not pull it out of the way when the shears cut through I felt the sting. Have done before but not this bad, as I walked to the laini I left a blood trail. A trip to the ER and 5 stiches later I got back home. The shears weresharp so it was a clean cut an inch long and deep, won't be mounting for a few days.

Ooooh... sorry to hear about that Dave! Great mounted Phals! I was looking at some of the ultra clingy roots on a couple of my Phal schilleriana today and thinking they would be GREAT to try for a first shot at mounting orchids. I think the root type would really grab whatever it was mounted to. I'm not sure if I'm brave enough to try it yet though! |

Stiches come out tomorrow, one good thing was the shears were steral because I always have them ready to cut orchids. Vivi I live in west central FL about 6 miles from the gulf. Hurricanes threaten us once in a while. Have had a couple tropical storms cross us that were hurricanes when they came ashore on the east coast.

Nice to hear your OK. I cut my foot recently but no stitches. Thank Goodness. Take care with them storms and hurricanes. Damian, I like the upside down Phals. Neat.

This update is a little late...better late than never. The latest of the two that got sick has ow developed a new leaf and seems to be on the right track. The oldest one is growing roots galore along with a Keikei.

What I use is a pair of small pointy scissors and a pokey stick (skewer). LOL, Like playing the Milton Bradley game "Operation" Carefully pry the roots loose and only cut those that need to be cut.
