What should I mount?

I am removing my Vanda from a dead piece of branch I have. I wanted to put some Catts on there but I keep hearing that Catts maybe too big for small mounts.

I am now in a debate between mounting some small Dand. bulbs or Catts that purchased in Home Depot on sale.

The Catts are HC124 and HC190. It doesn't its Latin name...just Hawaiian Wedding Song and Golden Yellow.

The numbers are code numbers, probably from when the orchids were flasked and have meaning only to the breeder/flasker. They are not specific to these crosses. Different breeders/flaskers would give them different numbers.

Hawaiian Wedding Song is a Cattleya so the correct, complete name for it is:
Cattleya Hawaiian Wedding Song

There is no cattleya hybrid registered with the name Golden Yellow. It probably refers to the colour of the flower. So it'll be just a NOID.

I decided to mount the two Cattleyas. I found them last night at my hardware store on sale for 6 bucks. Some were sickly but I choose the 'healthiest' ones.

They are the Cattleya Hawaiian Wedding Song & the other one is Cattleya Golden Glow ...I found its name.

Golden Glow on the left split in two because it fell apart after removing most of its rotten roots. Hawaiian Wedding Song on the right.

Now that I am here I wanted to ask if I mounted these correctly. I have surrounded the roots with Spa. moss before I tied them. I tied them just enough to hold them but leaving room for growth. Do you guys think it is a good setup? With the moss?

I think they look gorgeous! I have my Catts top dressed in Spagh moss in pots in order to retain moisture due to such dry conditions in my house. With you living in Florida, this isn't going to be a problem for you. They don't like their roots constantly wet, so all you have to do is water when the moss gets dry. I love the setup

Looks very nice FlaCo!

Where are you in Miami? I grew up on Key Biscayne.

Thanks for the replys!

Arti, i was worried about too much moisture with the moss (60-65% humidity right now). I'll follow the rule of greenthumbs for orchids and water when dry.

Vivi, I am in Hialeah Gardens near Miami Lakes area. Interstate I-75 and Miami Gardens drive. Around 20 mins from Key-Biscayne. How long were you down here?

I was on Key Biscayne (and then Homestead) from - geez let me think - 1976 until 1989. Went to Coral Gables High.

Wow, I am a youngen...so I went to Barbara Goleman Senior (new school between Hia. Gardens and Miami Lakes) but I have friends from Coral. I don't know if you have been here since you moved away but progress has been quick. It seems like every inch is being used up.

I have family in the Redlands (Homestead same difference). Homestead, is all about orchids...people private growers open up during the weekend to the public. There are a few commercial growers too. My favorite one is r.f. orchids (RF Orchids).
It is such a beautiful place...with quality orchids. Most people go there for the experience and their small orchid tours.

Do not be afraid of over-watering in Florida. I am watering my mounted and potted plants every day now. It got hot and dry very quick.

You will be surprised how little water the sphag will hold when mounted. If the sphag gets hard and dry, soak the mount for 20 minutes.

I think they look well mounted. You need a bit of something to hold some moisture around the roots so you don't have to water the mount 2-3 times a day and the sphag works well for that. You've anchored the plant in place which is necessary until it grows new roots. Just be sure the plant is not wobbly on the mount. I' think you've done well.

Watering for mounted plants is different than for potted ones. Usually mounted orchids need to be watered more. Watch your plants carefully for the next few months and see how they're responding.

I don't use Google for orchid names. Too many mistakes and many hybrids are not found. I use the RHS (Royal Horticultural Society) International Orchid Register to search for names.

Does your tag say "Cattleya" on it? I ask because 2 Cattleya Alliance orchid hybrids have been registered with the grex (hybrid name) of Golden Glow. There's Maronara Golden Glow. Maronara is a complex intergeneric hybrid containing Sophronitis, Encyclia, and Rhyncolaelia. The other is Sophrocattleya Golden Glow. Sophrocattleya (Sc.) is an intergeneric hybrid containing Sophronitis and Cattleya.

Should I pack it even more with moss? I have the roots covered to the point where I can't see them but it really isn't that thick.

Speaking of moss...is green moss any good?

Remember those mounts...one of them had to be taken off and put into intensive care. The other (the mount on the right in the original pic) pulled through and now graduated...I took off all of its wires and support tape. Now it is fully established.

The one in the pot is the one that didn't establish on the wooden mount. I placed it in spag for about a month and a half and now it is in Alifor doing well with three new growths.

Great that the one established, it looks really good! As for the other one, are you going to try remounting it again?

What do you think? I uncovered the top layer of the alifor and the roots were taking off. So knowing that I might just leave it alone.
