Epidendrum, from keiki to mounting...

Hi everybody, I'm Aleksa from Montenegro (small state on the coast of Adriatic sea)...

I've taken this cutting of Epidendrum around 8. March... I've been waiting around a month to make one keiki, than, I mounted that keiki... Ad you can see, the keiki is growing good, just I have one problem, roots are growing fast but not attaching to the wood! Does that means that this sort of Epidendrum do not like mounting, or it just need time to ''fall in love with mount''?

Here are pics...

Sorry for the bad English...

Aleksa: A great walk-through.

First I thought it was too small to be mounted. But after your results I think I should keep my mouth shut

Thanks for posting the different stages.

Hi Aleksa, most are epiphytic, many are lithophytic and still others are terrestrial. ( Lithophytes grow on rocks or stony soil ). According to some care sources they grow readily in almost any setting, whether in a pot, mounted on a cork slab, or in flowerbeds outdoors. They require standard fertilizer. Not the weak dilution you would use for Phals and when fertilized regularly they respond immediately with denser flower spikes, greener, stronger leaves and more robust roots. Use any balanced fertilizer according to manufacturers' recommendations. Bright light and keep the plant moist all year ( no rest period ).

Good luck with your plant.

Bill

Well, the only problem I see besides the fact that the plant may not like the mount, as it seems yours is telling you, is that the length of the cane on common reedstemed Epidendrums is kind of long, and very long if they do not get a lot of light. I grow all my reedstemmed Epis in pots and water often, not letting them dry out completely.
