| Oncidium Mounting Today I mounted 3 oncidiums to make a little more bench room and i thought of taking pics to show you how it is done. I used spaghnum moss, fishing line and a few cup hooks to hang them ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

| Fred that is so cool. Thanks for showing us, gave me a few ideas. I am not sure where I would hang an orchid though, my walls are this plastery concrete stuff. Until I get my shed converted, I will just have to drool.

| If I tried that on our lounge room floor (carpeted) the family jewels would be hung up next to the mounted orchids.

| Thanks for the pics , Fred. I really should mount my Oncs. too. I have a sphacelatum that's wilted , I think it's the low light, or maybe it just doesn't like the pot . Gotta go find me a log or something. |

| Keep in mind that Oncidium grow up on a mount. I have some 5 year old mounts that are now 20 inches higher than when they were mounted.

| Fred, I mounted my sweet sugar that I had been having so much trouble with.It just wouldn't grow or do anything. I put a small amount of spag behind it, It is looking much better in just the few weeks since I mounted it. My question is, you seem to have more spag on top of the mount. Is this better? I will post pic. If this was yours what would you do? I mist several times a day. Dunk once a week. I am in Galveston, TX area. thanks for your wisdom ;} I love mounts, and want to do many more. |

| the ones I mounted have a fairly extencive root syestem as i have covered the roots so i can keep the sphag moist that stops the sphag from drying out as fast plus I see you hold your mount down with wire as i use abit more sphag because i can hold the orchid down with fishing line. As it is winter here now i dont soak the mounteds I dont mist the plant either I only mist the sphag twice a week. I used to hold mine down with wire but over time the wire starts to rust. You have done a fine job mounting your plant it looks pretty good to me. |

| It was mentioned at an orchid society meeting that you should consider mounting an orchid if it tends to grow upwards. I've been thinking of mounting this one. Any comments? Last edited by MSPProductions; 06-20-2007 at 02:52 AM. |

| If you are looking to mount that oncid yes you can I would remove the yellowing bulb though. have you mounted an orchid before ? have you got the right Backing for the mount, sphag etc etc ? |

| Fred, the wire is plastic coated aluminum. I usually use panty hose but it's so ugly to me. I am slightly handicapped in my hands so fishing line is somewhat of a challenge. I also use the long pipe cleaners sometimes. The fuzz on them dries quickly and has caused no problems, which I was initially concerned about. The roots on this mount are under the two new growths at the top. I guess you are saying I am fine as is and need not add more spagh. Your mounts are beautiful! Someday I will have a porch full of them! You just wait and see |

With the way you water the mount there is no need for more sphag. When you do another mount just add a little more sphag keep the new one near this one and see which one grows better for you. you are going to have your porch full of mounted orchids cool I look forward to seeing that. |

| Plants that grow upward are plants that have never been properly trained. I put such plants in the pot at an angle such that the rhyzome is horizontal, then first train the new growth vertical, then, as the root system gets sufficiently extensive, I either pull the old growths/bulbs upright, which can often be done somewhat gradually, or just wait for there to be enough vertical newer growths to cut off the old misshaped bulbs. The exception to using this technique is if the spacing between the bulbs is so large that a pot is not practicle, tho many of these get bulb pans. All my Oncidium family plants are in pots and none of them climb out of their pots.

| Fred, I've never mounted an orchid before, I've been reading about mounting here and in a couple of books I've picked up. I'm definately going to remove the yellowing back bulb. It was actually quite wild seeing it go...there are also two half burried bulbs behind the yellow one. I might try that bag technique to get some new plants. |
