I bought an aerangis mounted and it's growing ok but I keep getting these patches of grey mold growing on the mount (I have no idea what kind of wood it is, maybe grape vine?). I tried scrubbing it with cinnamon, spraying w/ Brookn's The Best Stuff, but find that I still have to combat it daily. Should I be concerned? I'm increasing air flow around it now. Does anyone else have this problem and how can I get rid of it? Gross! (and no, I don't have pics of the mold...yet). Thanks all in advance. |

just a suggestion, i was taught to used bleach dilution 1 part to nine parts of water. but over several trial, i am using 1 to 12 dilution instead. works well for me BUT REMEMBER TO RINSE THE ENTIRE PLANT HEAVILY WITH WATER AFTER 10-15MINS of contact time and do in the evening, avoid sunny days. works very well for phals and my catasetums but bulbo doesn't take it that well. not sure about aerangis. greyish, brown or green color mold and even algae totally clean after it.

If the wood or media on mount is breaking down causing this last resort would be get fresh moss and new mount and re mount it. But usually good air flow and some more light as others have stated above help. How often are you watering and what are your day and night temps. Sounds like its staying wet to long possibly also.

Thank you all for your replies. The mount was sitting in a 'waterfall situation', so it was mostly moist all the time. No regular watering schedule, just high humidity and random splash droplets. The aerangis was growing a brand new root so i assume it was happy in there. How do terrarium/vivarium/orchidarium woods keep from getting moldy? Orchids4me: Day temps average in the mid 70s, nights mid 50s F. The mount isnt decaying I think. Catasetum-ian: bleach isn't an option if only because I don't keep any in the house, haha. Digitalgate: I don't have any UV options either except natural sunlight...hm. Cloudy these days... leafmite: that's actually how I wish my plant was planted, in lava rock. By the way, where did you get yours? Last edited by Jlie; 11-28-2011 at 11:17 AM. Reason: Finishing thoughts |

I keep several mounts in my paludarium which is very humid and with lots of natural untreated wood, but a fan seems to keep the mold away. Hope this works for you.

The increased air flow solved it. I'm daily misting and have not seen this mold/fungus resurface. I also dug around and found other posts about this. how do you stop fungus growing on you wood mounts? Mold... uh-ohhh! |
