I Did It! My First Mount.

I've had this phal. since April. I repotted it shortly after I got it, but it had such a massive root ball that I had to put it in a rather large pot. I drilled lots of holes in the sides hoping that it would provide enough air flow to the roots to prevent root rot, but last week I noticed the lowest leaf was wrinkly and limp. On the other hand, he was putting out about 10 new roots, so I decided to attempt mounting it instead. I'm glad I did! When I pulled this guy out of its pot it had lots of new root growth, and lots of dead roots.

I mounted it on an awesome (and rather large) piece of cork bark I found at Petco. To put it in perspective, the cork bark is 16 inches lengthwise. I'm hoping that my orchid will love this new situation and that his wrinkled leaf will perk up.

I'll post more photos when I have him hung up tomorrow (hopefully).

Looks great!
As for the wrinkly leaf it most likely will yellow over time and shed like older lower laves do during the growth spurt of new roots and a new leaf. But leave it be it provide energy for the plant when in growth stage.
Keep us posted would like to see those new roots take hold of that mount.

Very nice mount. That Phal looks very healthy as well and I'm certain it'll be right at home on the cork in no time.
Good Growing,
Tony

Emma, that looks GREAT! I have a noid mini Phal that I've been wanting to mount but just haven't gotten the courage up to do it! I bought the piece of cork for the mount many months ago but still haven't gotten up the guts to do it! Is that a special kind of moss you used to cover the roots?

Phal Gal - I used New Zealand sphagnum moss that I got from Cal West Tropical because it's down the street from me.

Here are a couple of pictures of my two mounts hanging in the window. My dad helped me hang them. He's super handy.

Greybeard - All my dad did was screw white hooks into the ceiling. Then we looped monofilament (fishing line) around the hook in the ceiling so it was doubled and tied s hooks onto the bottom of the line. That way I can unhook my mounts from the line when I need to water the plant. The mounts don't weigh much so it was super easy to hang them.

Koshki - Yes I have a lot of room for more plants. I have three new plants in quarantine right now that I'll move to my normal growing area later this week, plus a plant coming from a fellow geek. I'm excited to receive it.

Updated!

It's been a little over two months since I mounted this orchid, and it's doing really well! It's almost fully attached to the mount. It won't even jiggle. Also, it's putting out another new leaf. It appears to love being mounted. I just love all the roots on this guy!
