please don't make fun of it...

I was inspired by seeing your mounts, so I tried my hand at making one back in May.
I know it isn't pretty but I used a slab of pear tree wood that I had and I drilled holes through it. I had a few Phals that I had brought back from near death so their roots were quite small and so I thought that they would appreciate being mounted.
I have been watering it every other day and yesterday I was so excited when I turned the board around to see the cutest little root hanging on for dear life through one of the holes!
Something else that I was surprised about is that the dried sphagnum looks like it is coming back to life! I didn't know that it could do that after it was dried...but it is turning green.
I am looking forward to being able to take the net off when they are attatched to the board.
Did I do okay?

Looks pretty good to me. I have had some greening in my moss too but I think its algae and not live moss.

I will not make fun of it - it looks just as good as cork slab mounts. I like your idea of drilling holes in it - it does give the roots somewhere to go to hang on. I guess only time will tell if the moss is growing or not - I have had some actually grow (not just algae) so I know it is possible.

Thank you so much for the encouragement! How will I be able to tell if it is moss or aglae? I sure hope it is moss.

I like it alot. I haven't posted pics of any of the mounts I have made. Afraid they won't measure up I guess.

If it starts growing longer - then it is moss.. if it stays that shape and doesn't grow - then its algae growing on the not living moss. Mine actually started growing "up" in the pot - I had to repot to raise the plant to get it out of its "new" pile of moss (it was a phal - it didn't care).

It looks Great! I don't think you ever have to feel bad about posting a new try here. That's how we all learn. That plant looks super healthy and I'm sure it'll cover that slab with roots in good time!
My first mount put out its first baby root 2 days ago, but I need to wait till my camera can pick it up to post a pic I do have greening of my sphag as well, but in my case I'm 99% sure it algae. I don't care if the Phal don't care
Good Growing,
Tony

Hi Carkin, Why would we make fun? It's a great mount. I never even thought about mounting an orchid until I joined this forum and viewed the wonderful pictures of other members mounted orchids. Now I think I'm ready to try it. I hope mine turns out as good as yours. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you Emmaye! I actually have 5 Phals on the mount. Although that is counting the centre one as two because it has a basal growth beside it. They are all NOID's and I thought that it would look really pretty if they all bloomed together! But that is a long way away from happening. Right now I am just happy if they all survive!
