A couple of mounts

I bought these two NOid phals for $1 a piece on a clearance table at a local nursery. I mounted them up about 3 weeks ago and they are both showing good root growth and have a new leaf growing. This was my first try at mounting.

This is a pair of onc I picked up and mounted today. They are Oncidium Popoki 'Mitzi, and Oncidium Jairak Rainbow 'Freckle Face.

A close up

Do you think the mounts look okay? Thanks!

Thanks Amersault. The tags say Oncidium, but I am new at this so I will defer to the more experienced.

I really like the Clematis too it is 11 years old. Here is a better shot of it:

I got a Jairak Rainbow 'Easter Sunday' at the Atlanta orchid show in March, and it was labeled a Tolumnia. Mine is in a 2 1/2" pot - teeny little thing, but it bloomed like nobody's business.

Great looking job. I too have thought about mounting some Phals. What is the material that you used for them? Again, great job.

the local greenhouse I went to this past weekend just brought back a bunch of tolumnias from taiwan, and the jairak rainbow was included in them. I have a photo of one that looks exactly the same flower as that.

Really nice job on the mounts. I think you've got it down

I plan on trying a few in the near future, just looking for a few good, small plants. Happy Growing

Thanks for the nice comments everyone. I love gardening, but somehow never noticed orchids until I was gifted two for Mother's day this year. I think I am hooked. LOL.
I really like mounting orchids, but I think I will have to limit how many I have since they will all need to come inside eventually.

I think you are right. I just copied what was on the tag when I bought the plants. I wonder why they are labeled oncidiums?

Because years ago they were classified as Oncidiums. Many commercial growers do not keep up with name changes.

And before people start talking about the constant name changes, these types were put into Tolumnia in 1986.

Yep. Cork bark is great. I got some from the Pets Mart and they have nice pieces of mopani also. Look in the reptile section and you can find lots of nice mounting material.

Thanks for the explanation. I have googled it and came up with it listed both ways. One of the sites I found called it:

Onc. (Tolumnia) Jairak Rainbow mini

So if I understand what you are saying this plant should not be called oncidium at all, but is the care the same?

Bare rooted like that on the mount you will need to water daily. When they come in the tiny clay pots that are like a inch diameter with a few pieces of bark those you water daily also. These are usually set up in tiny pots so unlike the oncs in larger pots with a more water /moisture retaining media. The answer is no for that part of culture. High light yes, temps yes. But water daily oon the cork. Mount you have and they should do fine.

Updates on these orchids

I thought it would be fun to share some updated photos of these orchids. The NOID phals have grown alot and both of them are sending up spikes

I am not sure why some of the leaves have brown spots?

Tolumnia Popoki 'Mitzi, and Tolumnia Jairak Rainbow 'Freckle Face.

These are also doing well. No new blooms yet.

They look great! I would say the spotting is probably fungal. Do you have good air movement in the area?

Thanks. They were outside all summer on my front porch and that is where the spots started. I would think being mounted and outside would be enough air movement? Is there a spray you would recommend for clearing up fungal issues?

Thanks Emma. The roots have gone crazy. Soe of them have actually grown through the bark to the other side.
