And I said no more mounts... but made more anyway

Last year with the heat and dryspells I swore off mounts. They are high maintenance to keep hydrated. But I've gone and done it again. I'm always finding interesting pieces of wood. Then, I enjoy making them. So the next task will be keeping them happy. The Phals are from the clearance racks at Lowe's.
And I said no more mounts... but made more anyway-mount-1-stick-white-phal..jpg Bloomed last year too. Lives outside. This is an older mount.

And I said no more mounts... but made more anyway-mount-2-firewood-brassavola.jpg I posted this piece of wood last year and then never used it. (I had to re-rescue it from the wood pile) I recently broke the Brassavola's pot. So it got mounted instead of re-potted.

And I said no more mounts... but made more anyway-mount-3-old-driftwood-added-phals..jpg I've posted this before with three plants. I've recently added several more. The red one is a rebloom.

And I said no more mounts... but made more anyway-mount-4-lk.-buffum-wood-with-angm..jpg This too recently broke. (Squirrrels or someone is knocking things over in the GH) I picked this piece of wood up out at our rural property. This Angm. has languished. So I decided to mount it instead of a repot.

And I said no more mounts... but made more anyway-mount-5-lk.-buffam-wood-with-phals..jpg This piece is also from the rural property. The top is like a saucer and the plants are on top.

And I said no more mounts... but made more anyway-mount-6-driftwood-with-phals..jpg I've been trying to get something right with this neat piece of wood for a while. Now I've tried this.

I love the new mounts!
They look very pretty- do you find wood in the forests or buy them?

How cool! I recently limbed up some of the willow oaks in my yard, and saved some of the thicker branches, thinking they might make good mounts. Now I know what I'll put on them -- the NOID phals that are taking up shelf space in my growing area!

Do I need to let those limbs dry out or are they okay to use as green wood? Or does it not matter? I feel inspiration creeping up on me...

I get most of it from the wild. All of these are natural. The horizontal driftwood has been with us since before we were married. So it is a least 28 years old. Poor hubby! I threw two larger tringular pieces into the pool after I discovered ants. He's ironing in the back room, packing for vacation. He catches a glimpse of one in the pool. He thinks "Oh no, what happened to the cat." He quickly sees it is a piece of wood. But, oh, poor Bobo. What a terrible visual.

They look great Lynn!
To the member who asked if the wood should be dred first... I would recommend it and a good cleaning of the wood also before using it.
Others may have in put on this. But that's what I would recommend doing.

Wow, I love love love picture number 3 with all the phals. Gonna have to try that. I just mounted a B. nodosa yesterday! It must be the mounting time of year. Now I need to find some more cool pieces of wood to mount things on.

Catt. luteola perhaps? Compact grower—Oak Hill has some beautiful mounted ones! How's that for an enabler, Sunshine?

Imartiny, the mounts look beautiful!

Lynne, you are just making me want to do more mounting. lol You think it's bad for you down there, try it here where they are indoors half the year. Thats the only thing holding me back from doing more. I think I'm up to 3 dozen mounted orchids. I know if I had an abundandt supply of wood like you do, I'd have so many more. I love how you have mounted your plants.

I have a Catt. luteola and love it. Stays pretty compact, would probably make a great mounted plant. I have mine growing in a combo of hydroton and rocks, I treat it like a laelia and it seems very happy growing this way.

Thanks every one. And yes, you should age the wood. All of mine was found aged already for the most part. For driftwood I throw it in the pool and then let it sit out and get rain and such for a while to get rid of salt.

Smile Very Creative

I love all of your mounts but #3 is my favorite. I've never done one myself, but you have definetly inspired me to "think outside the pot".
