My First Mount

Well Kind of...
I bought this guy at the Santa Barbara Orchid Estate.
I haven't been able to keep it happy mainly because I haven't been able
to keep it hydrated enough.
So I thought maybe I'd have more luck with it if I got some Sphag Moss under it.
I soaked it and pried the roots off to separate it.
I've never done this before so I hope I didn't use too much or too little moss.
I guess we'll see.
I'm very interested in any feedback anyone might have!
Thanks!

Hi Veektor, It looks wonderful, what a nice job you have done. Those of you who can have mounted orchids are fortunate. Here in the U.P. of Mi, it gets so dry in winter.

This guy was so beautiful when I got it! But two blooms and a bud blasted within a week of being in my home. I think it got too dry.
Its very frustrating as I also had new growth form that also dried out.

I hope this makes it happy. I'm pretty much a Sphag Man so I've got high hopes!

I'm doing my best to keep my mits off of it!

If i'm not careful I'll over water it and it will be all over.

I just keep sending it good vibes and visualizing nice strong roots snaking their way to the sides of the pot any day now!!!

But for the most part it looks exactly as it does in the avatar, which is really good news seeing how I thought it was on its death bed!!!

Thanks for asking!

Is that your Sophronitis cernua? I think it looks good. I got one that was mounted on cork with nothing around it, and it just sat and sulked for a while. I unmounted, and remounted with a pad of sphag, and now it is pushing out new roots and growths all over.

Yes it is. Yeah sulk is a good word for how mine was behaving as well.
I'm hoping the sphag will do the trick for this guy as well!

In winter, I use heaters which makes the air dry. I rely on S moss to keep the roots from drying out too much

Having a cernua sit all summer doing nothing is what they do. It has a very weird growth pattern. Instead of starting to grow in the spring, it waits until July-ish before new roots and growths appeared.

The mount looks good. I water almost all of mine daily. Indoors in winter with the heat on dries them out pretty quick.
